@AstroMikeMerri Notwithstanding that we need to find out what we really need to know. The applications don't have to be immediately obvious. But there is certainty in lac of application if we don't reach for the stars first
@DanielCockling@durhamcathedral Granted, I still actually need to climb the tower. I missed out on that graduation tradition, as the year I left, they put the "hat" on the tower!
@DanielCockling@durhamcathedral That is a timeless view. A cathedral that defies perspective. It dominates the landscape ni matter how near are far you are from it
@GarethDennis@matthewhodg Presumably some new traction system would need to be scoped in here? Or are we just going to have diesel stopgap for the stopgap? I thought the scotrail had more of a long term electrification plan?
@GarethDennis The idea that we just 'stick a battery in' for a diesel engine is just daft. The argument I feel gets little notice is that metals needed for a high performance battery are a scarcer resource than the hydrocarbons we want to displace. Equitable use anyone?
Afternoon finalising my first actual lectures for our future geo energy module. An introduction to all things geothermal, with a side order of my geo engineering approach. #academictwiter
Day 1/2 being trained for taking over of the GREAT cell rig to me. This becomes my new toy from Nobember. Nervous, yes. But I do still get to break some rocks. We run the experiment tomorrow #postdoclife#AcademicTwitter
@GarethDennis Of course if they dont, it leave us with a half baked system that performs short of full ambition. Fuels the anit-lobby to say why should we expand something that never worked as a complete self fulfilling fallacy. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ Just waiting for him to condemn Euston now....
๐ขNEW PAPAPER ๐ข. Final paper from my PhD now finally available. We look at things micromechanical, diagenetic and carbonate. Of course thanks to collaborators/supervisors at @DurUniEarthSci@GEST_NCL@MirelandMark

@Stuartsediment@DurUniEarthSci I'm pretty sure I remember you showing us some of the proofs for the first ed during our 1st year tutorial with you. Somewhat refuse to believe that was around 2013/14 time... ๐คฃ๐จ
@slopenslide @EngineeringNCL@GEST_NCL Well done Ellen, hope all is well. That's our office group all done now. Really end of an era, or the start of a whole new one!
@GarethDennis can port over to proper railways, but the idea that its a serious technology is bonkers. Its like we've forgotten that ๐ are product of 200yrs engineering, that hyperflop can just "bypass"! (2/2)
@GarethDennis This thing is literally outside my office window. The theme of conversation with colleagues is generally 'don't get me started...!' ๐คฆ #gadgetbahn I just rationalise in the hope it may lead to some good engineering developments/testbed ideas that (1/2)
@chloriteclayre Well done Claire! ๐ฅณ Well deserved, I suppose you and Colleen graduating draws a line under our "generation" in the Drummond office. Mad to think k where the time has gone!
End of three days of fieldwork sampling waters in the Esk catchment. Finally got to sample the mine water discharges. Staggering changes to the clean river water as the drainage oxides. More than made up for the weather.
