@_PeterRyan Over the past decades the Irish govt has given out licenses to oil companies to drill, and a lot of the time they couldn't give them away. The Irish EEZ in not an oil province. There has been 2 finds commercialised over the past 5 decades. Kinsale is empty, corrib nearly.
@LPerrins Politics is a popularity contest. Maria Steen has no public profile, & made zero effort to raise her profile in the months before her announcing her candidacy. We are a country of 4 or 5 parties democratically voted in by the people. Why are people surprised by the outcome?
@deanfbuckley Yes, he's lived in Switzerland for over 30 years, that's why. If he avoids Irish taxes on income generated in Ireland, sure he's doing wrong. But to think the the source of is wealth is an island of 4 million people is wide of the mark.
@deanfbuckley He's lived in Switzerland for years, and I would imagine the majority of his wealth is generated outside of Ireland. is he evading Irish tax on his global income? Should he pay tax on the Irish portion? Should he have never left and probably made a fraction of what he has made?
@deanfbuckley But why does an Irish person who lives outside Ireland get treated differently to say a swiss person with financial interests in Ireland, amongst many other countries get treated differently?
@deanfbuckley Very wishy washy without having an in-depth knowledge of his financial affairs if you ask me. For what it's worth if I made my money from international finance, I reckon my interests would be better served in Switzerland than Kilmallock.
@deanfbuckley So it's a subjective title? Lots of people leave Ireland for Australia etc because they too don't want to pay taxes in Ireland - services are crap etc... They are domiciled outside the state, earn their money outside the state. What is the threshold at which you become an exile?
Mark Williams can't believe the 'Class of 92' are still going so strong and he REALLY wants to face John Higgins in the quarter-final

@KeithMillsD7 It's easy to talk tarrifs, but how will everyday Americans live with tarrifs? The bombastic comments land well with the MAGA crowd, but as you said, you can't shift a factory or process quickly. Nor can you make plastic tat or consumer electronics at an economically viable price.
@ciarannugent@caulmick Interesting figures. Have considered that Ireland is an outlier in western Europe, being the newest country or economy by a few hundred years, and we just don't conform to patterns seen in other countries in your sample?
