@AlexKontorovich ... students don't need a perfect teacher (whatever the heck that means in the high-dimensional space of teacher identity), but rather just a happy one (who takes palpable joy in the material... as was clearly the case in 310... especially when we got to the PNT)!
@AlexKontorovich I think a LOT about these tradeoffs in my courses now, and I've reached slightly different conclusions at the UG vs G levels. Nevertheless, nothing beats the Feynman wisdom...
Despite the loss, a hard-fought game for @TartanFB, and the capstone for a terrific season. Incredible to meet so many accomplished (and absolutely raucous) @cmualumnihouse fans in the stands. Go Tartans!
It’s entertaining to play with https://t.co/MsGMSLdOXz, but I’ll admit that I find it (extremely) challenging to imagine a serious scientific use case… except perhaps for generating hot takes (*hopefully* false) on MD thermostats… #compchem
@SpencerRKatz@DanVanselow@adafruit@Ellumiglow This is out-of-this-world execution on an already-awesome premise. In a world of time machines, I’m not sure that Mary Shelley and Charles Johnson would find common ground on many things, but this is very much one of those things!!
The cucurbitaceous fanfare served as coda to last week’s “cautionary pumpkin,” part of our unit on (potentially extremely spooky) unintended consequences of constrained molecular dynamics.
David S. Pumpkins returns (just as on @nbcsnl)! On this side of the Great Pumpkin Patch today to talk about how to interrogate the ghosts that live within equilibrium autocorrelation functions. (And “yes, several” questions were asked about Green-Kubo / linear response theory.)
@AdityaSKhair1 @JKabarowski Congrats! I think I have a good “guess,” but the quotes are because I use the word “guess” to mean “set of notes from a terrific thesis defense.”
@andrewwhite01 Based on brief conversations I’ve enjoyed with @JimPropp on packings in a variety of dimensions, I could imagine potential curiosity there!
It was very special to get to spend time with our grizzled lab veterans, our new members just starting on their research journeys, and an array of friends of the lab… coming full circle, a sweet way to kick off the summer! (15/n)
The summer has officially kicked off! And with it, a 🧵 of recent highlights, starting with @DaveDzombak getting the @CMU_CEE Summer Research Program stirred up with a rousing set of opening remarks this week. (1/n)
… and also every single PhD student pouring their heart into empathetic, attentive, and scientifically illuminating work as teaching assistants, both for our @CMU_CEE @CMU_Mech grad molecular simulation course and for our undergrad numerical methods course. (14/n)
