Getachew Reda: "Wollega is no longer a region of security concern, but one of developmental hope."
A new chapter is unfolding in Wollega. Getachew Reda, Advisor Minister to the Prime Minister for East African Affairs, has hailed the region’s transformation from a site of instability to a growing hub of opportunity.
Following a tour of the area, Getachew praised the local community and youth leadership for driving this shift. "What we have seen here is extremely promising," he stated, noting that Wollega’s success in harnessing its natural resources serves as a blueprint for rapid national progress.

This morning we inaugurated the Welmel River Irrigation Development Project, located in Delo-Mena Woreda of the Bale Zone in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region, which was initiated by the Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands, with the primary objective of enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring food sovereignty through the efficient utilization of the Welmel River for irrigation development. By establishing a sustainable surface irrigation system, the project seeks to improve the livelihoods and resilience of local communities that have long depended on rain-fed agriculture.
Upon full operation, the project will provide reliable irrigation for 9,687.45 hectares of farmland, supporting around 20,000 farming households. This is expected to substantially enhance agricultural productivity, increase resilience to drought, and create new employment opportunities within the community. Beyond these economic impacts, the project contributes to improved food sovereignty by strengthening local water management institutions, promoting community ownership, and ensuring the sustainable use of the Welmel River’s resources.
Today marks a historic occasion for all Ethiopians as we lay the foundation stone for two transformative projects: the urea fertilizer plant, to be developed by Ethiopian Investment Holdings in partnership with the Dangote Group, and the Gode Oil Refinery, to be constructed by Golden Concord Group Limited (GCL).
The Gode Oil Refinery will have a production capacity of 3.5 million tons per year, utilizing crude oil and condensate from the Hilala oil field. Meanwhile, the fertilizer plant, with a capacity of 3 million tons annually, will rely on natural gas from the Calub gas fields, delivered through a 108 km pipeline.
These projects represent more than industrial progress. They embody our shared responsibility to harness opportunities, strengthen cooperation, and promote peace. Hence I call upon all Ethiopians to continue mobilizing in unity for progress. By doing so, we elevate Ethiopia’s presence on the global stage in a way that honors the true spirit of our Ethiopian identity.
Ethiopia celebrates a sweet victory after years of bitter struggle and strong leadership. GERD will remain as a centerpiece of the country's history. The name @AbiyAhmedAli will always be attached to this success, as highly consequential leader in Ethiopian history. Congrats!
Too often, Africa’s story at climate summits begins with what we lack – lack of finance, lack of technology, lack of time. Let us begin instead with what we have.
Another milestone showcasing Ethiopia's renaissance and inevitable prosperity. Thank you Your Excellency PM Dr. @AbiyAhmedAli, and congratulations to all of us.
Congratulations to all Ethiopians on another milestone in our journey toward food security and agricultural transformation. Today, we signed the Fertilizer Complex Shareholder Investment Agreement between Ethiopian Investment Holdings and Dangote Group. With an investment of $2.5 billion, this mega project will produce up to 3 million metric tons of fertilizer annually, placing Ethiopia among the largest producers globally.
This project will create jobs locally, ensure a reliable fertilizer supply for our farmers who have long faced challenges, and mark a decisive step in our path to food sovereignty. It strengthens Ethiopia’s competitiveness across the continent and reflects our commitment to executing strategic investments that serve our people and our future.
Following today’s signing, we will officially launch the project on site. We have started this journey, and we will finish it for our farmers, for our economy, and for Ethiopia’s future.
🌾🇪🇹 Ethiopia just ended its wheat dependency in 3 years—and now exports to neighbors! Former 🇳🇬 President @OBJ_Official hailed it as proof of Africa’s potential: "If Ethiopia can do it, so can the rest of us!" A lesson in resilience amid global crises. #Prosperity#AfricaRising
Regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
"The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is now complete, and we are preparing for its official inauguration. While there are those who believe it should be disrupted before that moment, we reaffirm our commitment: the dam will be inaugurated. To our neighbours downstream—Egypt and Sudan—our message is clear: the Renaissance Dam is not a threat, but a shared opportunity. It is a symbol of regional cooperation and mutual benefit. The energy and development it will generate stand to uplift not just Ethiopia, but the entire region. Egypt’s Aswan Dam has never lost a single litre of water due to the GERD. Likewise, Ethiopia remains committed to ensuring that our growth does not come at the expense of our Egyptian and Sudanese brothers and sisters. We believe in shared progress, shared energy, and shared water. Prosperity for one should mean prosperity for all. Ethiopia remains ready and willing to engage constructively with downstream countries. We extend an open invitation to the governments and peoples of Egypt, Sudan, and all Nile Basin nations to join us in celebrating this historic milestone—Ethiopia’s Renaissance—in September."

The IMF has completed its 3rd review under the ECF for 🇪🇹 Ethiopia, unlocking $262.3M in support. Economic reforms are progressing, inflation is down, exports and reserves are up. Continued reform momentum is key! https://t.co/t6xTbn2i1O
The Hambaricho Mountains represent a remarkable facet of Ethiopia’s rich natural and cultural heritage. Situated in the Central Ethiopia region, this mountain range offers stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and significant historical value. Hambaricho Mountain and its surrounding ranges served as the administrative centre and seat of successive Kambata kings from the 16th century until the late 19th century.
I encourage citizens and visitors from around the world to experience the breathtaking beauty of Hambaricho and to take on the challenge of climbing its iconic 777 hand-carved stairs which I accomplished last week!
H.E President Taye Atske-Selassie gave a key note address at the International Conference on Irrigation and Climate Resilient Production being held on the margins of the 38th AU Summit.
Great to meet 🇪🇹 PM @AbiyAhmedAli to discuss Ethiopia's impressive economic performance. I saw here in Addis Ababa the signs of a vibrant private sector-led market economy - and am delighted the IMF is a partner for the government’s homegrown reform agenda.
