Abkhaz opposition leader Kan Kvarchia, speaking at a press conference on 9 June after a Russian court sentenced him in absentia to nearly 11 years in prison, also commented on developments in Russia and on Abkhazia’s relationship with Moscow:
of our ancestors (глумимся над костями наших предков) by celebrating Maslenitsa (Масленица) and burning an effigy in the very place from which the Muhajirs (махаджиры) were sent off on their final journey.
What we need are cleaner and more transparent relations with Russia.”
