@LyleIsaacsUMD just presented his group’s research on pillar[n]arene-based hosts for the sequestration of illicit drugs in the body. Their host P6AS was found to effectively sequester meth and fentanyl even after an extended period following administration 😲 #Calix2022
Dr. Werner Nau is currently giving his lecture on using macrocycles with fluorescent dyes to monitor membrane transport. Amphiphilic macrocycles can be used alongside these reporter pairs for transport of impermeable molecules across the cell membrane. 🤓 #Calix2022
Dr. Konrad Tiefenbacher @TiefenbacherLab just gave a super interesting talk on the synthesis of large resorcinarene-like macrocycles based on xanthene. His group has shown how these macrocycles are great for creating deep cavity cavitands and H-bond based capsules. #Calix2022
Dr. Arkadi Vigalok ended our afternoon with a lecture on making sensors from functionalized calixarenes that respond to analytes with a change in fluorescence. His group synthesized a receptor, owing its tunability to substitution with an aromatic acetylene at the rim #Calix2022
Great talk by @JenniferHiscoc2 on supramolecular self-associating amphiphiles. The anionic components of these SSAs have been observed to assemble into different structures depending on their environment. They have also been shown to act as antimicrobial agents! #Calix2022
Yannan Lin gave his talk, describing the synthesis of a hemicryptophane host capable of regulating access and binding of small molecules in organic solvents. His work focuses on developing biomimetic cavities using counter-anion tuning to modulate host-guest affinity #Calix2022😯
Up next, Dr. Elgrishi @ChemNoemie discussed her work on encapsulating fuel-producing electrocatalysts within metallocages, with the goal of measuring the effect on their electrochemical properties. #Calix2022 👀👩🔬
Before a quick beignet break☕️, Dr. Liat Avram-Biton talked about her work using GEST NMR to study host-guest systems. She described how GEST can amplify seemingly undetectable NMR signals at low concentrations and provide a way to determine guest exchange rates 😲 #Calix2022
And currently Dr. Mei-Xiang Wang is finishing up his talk describing an improved synthesis of zigzag hydrocarbon nano belts using resorcinarenes as a starting point. He also discussed his group’s synthesis of the first fully conjugated zigzag hydrocarbon belt!
Day 3 of #Calix2022 begins! So far this morning we’ve had the pleasure of hearing virtual talks from Dr. Olivia Reinaud, discussing their work with biomimetic cavities, and Dr. Dong-Sheng Guo who walked us through the use of azocalixarenes as a basis for drug delivery systems.
