Canada's new tariffs took effect today.
Everyone wants to know if this is bad news.
Short run: barely. Long run: worse than almost anyone is saying.

@dieworkwear Hi Derek. I found this piece you wrote nearly 10 years (!) ago. Wondering if you would still agree with your recommendations here, or if you’d make any updates.

Our electoral system greatly exaggerates the actual differences in regional political opinions. We’re probably going to hear a lot about national unity over the coming months, and fixing this would be a good place to start.
ANSWER to yesterday's #Election2025 Trivia Poll: Canada's per capita GDP fell further relative to US level (evaluated at PPP ex rate) under Brian Mulroney than any other postwar PM. Painful adjustments to 1989 FTA and 2% inflation target were the main reasons. #cdnecon /2
One thing about all these comparisons to the US: a major reason the US has its economy running so much faster is that it has been running deficits that are 5x (or more) the size of those in Canada.
Would the National Post et al make that trade or no?
I will never continue to be amazed how so many Liberals, New Democrats, and others on the centre-left and left seem to be unbothered by a system designed to prevent wages from going up and that exploits vulnerable workers from the global south.
Extraordinario esto, según anunció la CNE la noche de la elección, los resultados fueron:
Maduro 51.2%
Edmundo 44.2%
Otros 4.6%

Takes even longer to build a mine in the US than it does in Canada, which is saying something.
But it takes an excruciatingly long time to build a mine anywhere, with global avg at 23 yrs (discovery-to-production).
Good thing the energy transition is notoriously light on metals
Regular reminder that extreme poverty has fallen hugely in recent decades and has never been this low in human history!
Even after the short increase due to Covid, the improving trend recovered quickly:

The Canada Child Benefit was absolutely vital in reducing child poverty. A victory for the federal government (and for Canada) that doesn’t get talked about enough.

@GovCanHealth Looking for assistance. I'm a researcher looking for EBIC data (https://t.co/vhKxA8iHGS). I know more recent version of this data exists, want to get my hands on it. But the email contact on that page is broken, and the "contact us" phone line wasn't able to help me
Al-Shifa Hospital, a sanctuary amidst the rubble in Gaza City, is now wrestling with a looming crisis — power cuts that could cut short numerous lives.
@stephenfgordon Yes, but presumably they are weighing in on the current context. What e.g. Poloz is arguing is that forward wage increases won’t cause that spiral (and are actually necessary). Meanwhile governor of BoC is saying essentially the opposite. That’s what I see them responding to.
