Conference on Adult Education Program

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with partners, organized a conference on 9 and 10 October in Asmara focusing on the expansion of the adult education program across the country.

Mr. Petros Hailemariam, representative of the Minister of Education, indicated that since the days of the armed struggle for independence, the EPLF has been working to eradicate illiteracy, realizing its significance in expediting social change. Mr. Petros went on to say that since independence, the Government has been earnestly working to expand the program.

Noting that it is impossible to achieve reliable and sustainable development without eradicating illiteracy, Mr. Petros expressed his expectation that the conference will have significant input in designing a roadmap for the development of the program.

The participants conducted extensive discussions on the progress of adult education at the Ministry of Defense and schools, the current situation of the adult education program, the experience gained from the 2008 study on the program, the role of the Ministry of Education’s mass media in the effort, as well as the implementation of extension education programs.

Mr. Gebrezgi Dmam, Director General of Adult Education and Media at the Ministry of Education, said that efforts will be exerted to expand educational access and training in remote areas of the country, enhance the culture of reading, revive the productivity and creativity of citizens, and further expand the basic education program through mass media.

Potomkin Party (PP) sponsored/affiliated pundits - Horn Review et el - are indeed a strange breed who can float, with a straight face, outlandish and ludicrous assertions cloaked in "academic" garb.

The latest version dwells on "prospects" for Ethiopia to "rescind its Mother State's Permission" and recognition of Eritrea!

In the first place, Eritrea's independence was not granted on a "silver platter" by Ethiopia or any other power on earth.

Indeed, Eritrea's process of decolonization and inalienable right of independence should have been accomplished in the 1940's in accordance with international law and established norms and practices. But this inalienable right was suppressed to give primacy for, and mollify the "overriding geopolitical interests" of, the US and other powers. In the event, the Eritrean people were compelled to pay a huge sacrifice in Africa's longest war of national liberation to achieve their independence.

These are the indelible facts. And for their own sanity, apologists of occupation and colonial rule better grapple with their emotional/moral crises instead of wasting time in an elusive quest for untenable legal conjectures.

FM Osman Saleh met yesterday, on the margins of UNGA80, Mr. Massad Fares Boulos, US Senior Advisor for African Affairs to President Trump to discuss avenues for renewed engagement between the two countries as well as the prospects of collaboration on vital matters of regional peace and stability.

This important meeting must be seen as a prelude to, and harbinger of, a new chapter of normative bilateral ties that will reverse almost two decades of adversity, that included unwarranted sanctions imposed on Eritrea with deleterious consequences, in the interests of both countries and the Horn of Africa region as a whole.

#Eritrea's delegation, led by Foreign Minister Osman Saleh, is participating at UNGA80. The delegation met, on the margins of the Session yesterday, with Foreign Ministers of Greece, Sudan, Portugal and Burundi respectively.

[BREAKING] British Foreign Minister spoke to the #Ethiopian foreign minister, Gedion Timotheos, in August informing him : The British Government’s position is that [#Eritrea & #Ethiopia] must pursue commercial access to the sea through peaceful, negotiated means. The #UK does not support aggressive action or rhetoric that threatens a country���s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The previous Foreign Secretary [David Lammy] spoke to Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister [Gedion Timotheos] in August, when he warned against the risk of miscalculation and encouraged dialogue with Eritrea. Vanity on the Red Sea: Ethiopia’s Dangerous Delusion

Addis Ababa cloaks old-fashioned expansionism in the language of survival, but its bid for a seaport is nothing more than colonial arrogance reborn.

Ethiopia that once preached that Africa’s borders were sacred. Now it threatens to tear them apart for the sake of vanity and power.

In 1963, Ethiopia lectured Africa that colonial borders must never be touched. Prime Minister Aklilu Habte-Wold warned that to revise them would unleash endless wars. Six decades later, Ethiopia itself is the one rattling sabers, demanding a seaport, and threatening to annex Eritrean, Somali, or Djiboutian territory if denied. The hypocrisy could not be more glaring, or more dangerous.

Ethiopia justifies its ambition with the same arguments Europe once used to carve up Africa. First comes the economic refrain: “our growth requires it, our future and our existence depends on it”. This is the language of plunder, not partnership. Eritrea and its neighbors are sovereign states, not Ethiopia’s lifeline.

Then comes the geopolitical excuse: “we are vulnerable without our own outlet to the sea”. Britain said the same of the Suez Canal; France said the same of Djibouti. But strategy never sanctified invasion then, and it cannot justify invasion now.

Finally, the appeal to national pride: Ethiopia claims that “a great nation cannot remain landlocked”. That is not cooperation, it is vanity. Vanity is exactly what drove European empires to plant flags across Africa. Vanity is what Menelik II invoked when, with European rifles in hand, he annexed Oromo, Somali, and Sidama lands to build modern Ethiopia.

This is the bitter truth: Ethiopia’s arguments are not new. They are the colonial playbook, dusted off and draped in the Ethiopian flag and PP’s empty slogan. And just as Africa once rejected Europe’s colonial claims, it must now reject Ethiopia’s.

The Horn of Africa is not Ethiopia’s playground. Sovereignty is not a bargaining chip. If Addis Ababa insists on echoing the colonizers, it deserves the same answer they received: rejection, resistance, and rebuke.
