Hoax News Story on the Phantom “Eritrean Oil Tanker”

The Embassy of the State of Eritrea in London refers to reports carried by supposedly reputable news outlets including Reuters, AFP, BBC and others about the hijacking on 20 August 2026 off the coast of Yemen of what they wrongly claim to be an “Eritrean flagged” oil tanker.

This bizarre story is astounding on many counts:

The reports invariably cite the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) as the primary source of their “information”. The Eritrean Embassy in the UK wishes to clarify that in the first place, the report by UKMTO (UKMTO Hijack #118) makes no mention of the said ship being “Eritrean flagged”. UKMTO has re-iterated this fundamental fact to the Embassy in its response to its official request for clarification this week.

Furthermore, all the information in the public domain about this ship shows that it is not owned by, and has no links whatsoever with, Eritrea. This ship is part and parcel of the growing number of ships in what the IMO categorizes, in its parlance, as the “Shadow Fleet”.

Indeed, the IMO maintains that the ship (with Registration IMO 920476) is clearly categorized as being of “indeterminate ownership” in its official documents. Eritrea’s Permanent Mission to the IMO has confirmed that IMO records show that “the ship is flying a false Eritrean flag; i.e. as not owned or officially registered in Eritrea”.

These are the true facts. Yet, the usual culprits chose to abandon all semblance of journalistic standards to indulge and unleash another despicable campaign of disinformation on Eritrea.

Every time I see Abiy Ahmed, I cannot help but think of him as someone who repeatedly betrays and double-crosses those around him. He begged and pleaded with Eritrea for support against the TPLF, even serving tea at President Isaias's residence in an effort to secure Eritrea's backing. Note Eritrea suspended its membership from IGAD in 2006. Now Eritrea has withdrawn its membership!

Eritrea’s reason for withdrawal from IGAD is "Unfortunately, over time and especially since 2005, IGAD has not only failed to meet the aspirations of the peoples of the region, but instead played a deleterious role becoming a tool against targeted Member States; particularly #Eritrea. These unwarranted acts prompted Eritrea to suspend its membership in April 2007."

A Kenyan politician specializing in foreign relations and security put it bluntly: “It is #Ethiopia that stands accused of irredentism.” He added that Addis Ababa now finds itself increasingly isolated — with virtually every major actor, from the #US and #SaudiArabia to #China, the #ArabLeague, and multiple #African states — telling Ethiopia that its approach is unacceptable, leaving the country on the defensive diplomatically.

He stressed that it is perfectly normal for a landlocked state to seek sea access through bilateral agreements with its neighbours — #Eritrea, #Djibouti, or #Somalia. But it becomes an entirely different matter when a country starts entertaining the idea of seizing territory by force, imposing a naval base, and projecting military power at the expense of its neighbours. According to him, even Ethiopia’s closest partners have made it clear: this path is beyond the pale.
