Eritrea’s Sovereignty Is Not Negotiable: Neither Is the Sovereignty of Any Other African Nation
Embassy of the State of Eritrea
Washington, D.C.
17 August 2026
*"...At the heart of current Eritrea-Ethiopia tensions is a fundamental question that should not be obscured: commercial access to a port is one matter; sovereignty over another country’s coastline or territory is entirely another".
*"...Eritrea has no territorial claim against Ethiopia, demands no Ethiopian land or resources, and seeks no alteration of Ethiopia’s internationally recognized borders. Eritrea has never, in recorded history, opposed Ethiopia’s legitimate commercial use of regional ports through mutually negotiated arrangements. Landlocked countries throughout the world conduct international commerce through neighboring coastal states without acquiring sovereignty over their territory. In fact, commercial necessity creates opportunities for cooperation among countries; it does not create territorial entitlement".
*"...The overall principle at stake extends far beyond Eritrea. Africa’s interstate order rests on respect for inherited international colonial boundaries, sovereign equality, and territorial integrity. If established borders can be reopened because one country is larger, landlocked, economically ambitious or considers another state’s territory strategically necessary, virtually no African boundary would remain immune from challenge".
*"...Eritrea claims no territory belonging to another state and seeks peaceful, mutually beneficial relations with Ethiopia and all its neighbors. What is not open to negotiation is Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity".
*"...Eritrea’s sovereignty is not a geopolitical bargaining chip. It is an internationally recognized legal right, and the same right upon which the security, sovereignty and territorial integrity of every African nation ultimately depend".

Aid is not a commandit is a choice.
ብጽፍርና፡ ብጽፍርና፡ ብጽፍርና
A sovereign people do not receive what they have not asked for, nor accept what they do not need.
When Eritrea requires support, it will speak with clarity. When it chooses self-reliance, it walks with dignity.
How, then, can anyone manufacture controversy from a nation’s right to decide its own path?
We seek knowledge, not dependency; partnership, not imposition.
If aid becomes necessary, we will request it.
If not, let our pursuit of feeding ourselves, building ourselves, and standing on our own feet be respected.
For a nation rising by its own hands cannot be lectured on what it has not asked for.

From historical archives: Britain considered Eritrea as a war booty in the Second World War and literally plundered its entire economy; essentially for nefarious political ends. And UK Governments have not, to-date, acknowledged nor made amends for the abominable transgression.
PP (aka Potemkin Party) political and military officials are in an overdrive mode these days; enveloped as they are in inordinate fanfares to "normalize" their delusional and reckless pursuit of "securing sovereign access to the sea".
They are even harking back to the dark chapter in the modern history of both countries to allude to, and lionize, the annexation period; unlawful and abominable as this is.
As underlined on various occasions before, this is of course a political blasphemy of the highest order; a red line that should not be contemplated or crossed.
PP is dangling this toxic, adventurist, agenda of war and conflict while presiding over an economy that requires intermittent financial injections from the IMF, the WB, and other assorted multilateral and bilateral "donors". The multiple internal wars that are raging in Ethiopia to exact avoidable losses of precious lives and the destruction of property is another quagmire that warrants judicious resolution for the sake and welfare of the Ethiopian people.
And yet, PP officials and their minions seem to indulge in extensive and elaborate gaslighting - hosting Summits on Climate Change; Afro-Caribbean Cooperation etc. - to deceive and hoodwink their domestic and international constituencies rather than seeking enduring solutions to their domestic woes and contributing to a regional climate of stability and cooperation on the basis of legality and common sense.
Eritrea Is Still the Way
According to Jawar Mohammed, Abiy Ahmed’s grip on power is collapsing. He no longer commands the military, relying instead on a handful of generals whose loyalty is sustained only through payments. His downfall, Jawar contends, is inevitable. But the real question is: with Abiy gone, can Ethiopia restore a transitional order that genuinely represents all regions and ethnic groups? The answer will determine whether the country stabilizes or plunges deeper into fragmentation.
Such a transition would require an inclusive interim government that brings together representatives from all regions, political movements, civil society, and traditional leaders.
But even the most balanced transitional framework cannot succeed without neutral ground. And today, only Eritrea offers the stability and impartiality needed to facilitate such a process. As a neighbor removed from Ethiopia’s internal rivalries and with a genuine interest in regional peace, Eritrea is uniquely positioned to host or support a credible transition.
Without such a venue, Ethiopia risks spiraling into chaos—potentially worse than post-genocide Rwanda.
The stakes could not be higher. Eritrea is still the only way.

#Eritrea: Setting the Record Straight
(Embassy of The State of Eritrea; Washington, DC)
*Eritrea is not mobilizing for war and has not, certainly, been engaged in provocative military action or political brinkmanship against Ethiopia.
*For the record, the specter of tension and apprehension in the region stem from unsettling Ethiopian pronouncements and frantic domestic media campaigns to acquire a “port and coastal territory through diplomatic and legal means if possible, and by force if necessary”.
*This is an unacceptable proposition in international relations and fraught with unnecessary and avoidable destabilization of the region. In the event, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and other relevant policy experts must call a spade a spade.
