@darrengrimes In the past they held coaches up at gun point or gangs of pick pockets worked the streets. Crime has not changed. We have portable devices that are easy to snatch (why do you think Victorian women kept their money in their underwear?).

@darrengrimes Peaceful & pretty for some; racist and homophobic for others; sexual discrimination & violence, child abuse by individuals & the state were common & ignored. It may be less pretty now, but at least I don’t fear for my children or my black and gay friends. Or not as much, anyway.
