On 20 April 1994, Queen Rosalie Gicanda was killed and thousands who had sought refuge at Mugombwa Catholic Church were locked inside by Titiano Pagolalo, an Italian priest who gave the keys away to the killers.
All of them were subsequently killed.

To gather them in one place, Bourgmestre Ntaganzwa of Nyakizu Commune, along with members of the Interahamwe, first blocked all the routes to prevent them from fleeing to Burundi.
