Imagine waking up to ten missed calls. You return one of them only to hear, "I have a wedding coming up and I need financial support."

Sometimes i find myself asking, if you are ready to get married, why not plan a wedding that matches your financial means? Why take on obligations that immediately require emergency fundraising from friends and relatives?

Marriage is not a competition and a wedding is not a show. There is nothing wrong with having a simple ceremony that you can comfortably afford. In fact, starting a marriage without unnecessary financial pressure may be one of the best gifts a couple can give themselves.

Perhaps it is time we stopped measuring weddings by their size and began measuring them by the strength of the commitment behind them. We need to be more realistic, live within our means and stop putting ourselves under pressure to impress others. A successful marriage matters far more than an expensive wedding.

Modernizing Agriculture starts with fixing the basics

Rwanda’s agriculture sector is often praised as one of the key drivers of economic transformation, and to be fair, the country has made commendable progress over the years. But sometimes, it is the small experiences on the farm that remind us there is still a big gap between policy on paper and reality on the ground.

This week, i experienced that reality firsthand. On Thursday, i received exciting news from the farm that Jessica, one of my dairy cows, had safely given birth to a healthy calf (Jennie). Like any farmer, i was relieved and happy. But after 24 hours, i got another call informing me that the cow had retained the placenta, a condition that requires urgent veterinary attention to avoid infections and complications.

I immediately told the cattle keeper to call the veterinary officer. His response caught me off guard; the veterinary officer had no means of transport to reach the farm. Imagine that for a moment. A farmer dealing with an emergency has to think about how to transport the veterinary staff before the animal can receive treatment.

Eventually, we managed to get another doctor, and i personally drove close to 40 kilometers to ensure the cow received treatment. Thankfully, Jessica is now recovering well. But the whole experience left me thinking deeply about what we really mean when we talk about policy reform, modernization of agriculture, and improving service delivery.

The truth is, we cannot genuinely talk about modern agriculture when the basics are still missing. Agricultural extension workers and veterinary officers are the people closest to farmers. They are the bridge between government policy and productivity on the farm. Yet many of them are operating without motorcycles, without proper medical equipment, without refrigeration for vaccines, and without modern artificial insemination tools.

In a country where livestock farming plays a major role in household incomes and nutrition, veterinary services should not depend on whether a farmer owns a car or can facilitate transport for government staff.

If we are serious about increasing productivity, extension services need to be strengthened at the cell and sector levels. Veterinary officers should be properly equipped and facilitated to respond quickly when farmers need them.

The dairy sector itself also raises important questions.

Why is milk in Rwanda still relatively cheap compared to other countries in the region, yet farmers continue struggling with production costs? Today, many farmers sell milk between 450 and 550 francs per liter. On paper, the numbers may look attractive. For example, four Friesian cows producing about 30 liters each per day can generate around 120 liters daily. At 550 francs per liter, that is roughly 66,000 francs a day.

But once you factor in feeds, veterinary care, workers, water, transport, and farm maintenance, dairy farming quickly becomes a very expensive business.

This is why many farmers are slowly shifting away from dairy farming into beef production or piggery, where they feel returns are more predictable.

Rwanda needs more milk production, better nutrition, and stronger agro-processing industries. But that will only happen if farmers are supported practically, not just theoretically. Policies must move beyond documents and conferences and start responding to the everyday realities farmers face on the ground.
