Hi Sarah, this press release abt Jill Rakusen's new book might be of interest (do you remember interviewing her some years ago, about 'Giving Voice'?) Her work has developed hugely since then; you might enjoy following this up?
“It’s a contribution to reclaiming a role for music, & in particular, song, that goes beyond the constructs of ‘musician’ vs ‘non-musician’, ‘performer’ versus ‘audience’, ‘sacred’ vs ‘profane’, & beyond the construct of music as an art, a means of manipulation, or a panacea.”
A gentle & kindly guide to Jill’s unique approach to song, the book is designed as a Companion for personal use for years to come
It's potentially for anyone –
whether you sing or not
whether or not you define yourself as ‘musical’

And novelist Kazuo Ishiguro talking about the rich heritage of the song, how it came to be in the film, and why he thinks people are so moved by it.

We love #BillNighy's rendition of The Rowan Tree in #Living. It's such a wonderful example of using profound authenticity to connect with song. Apparently most of the crew members were in tears when it was filmed! 🥹
Saw Living today, and lovely to hear @LisaKnappMusic singing The Rowan Tree on the end credits. More surprising to hear what sounded like Bill Nighy himself singing it beautifully and movingly during the film itself. A good film.
Here's #BillNighy talking about his relationship to #song:
"It was so different from acting. It was so much more personal and so much more exposing"

"GV has to be part of Primary Health Care - for me it is - in my heart it's like coming home. It is not feel-good nonsense: it can be integrated with medical knowledge and is integral to an holistic approach."

Starting today... An opportunity to have a deep dive into the question of what the songs and music that we choose to listen to and preserve really say about us collectively. Such a vitally important question.
