Look what arrived today! I'm SO excited my first book is out in the world!!! It is an amazing and surreal feeling 🥹🥹💖💖
Thank you @Maura_R and the whole team at @ucpress for helping make this happen.
The dialogues unveiled in the Cornel rape case between supposedly civilised men, attending a prestigious university, are a vivid reminder that the rise of the manosphere is aided and abetted by the so-called 'elites' and is a reflection of the overall tilt toward the thinly veiled forms of authoritarianism, chauvinism and fascism.
.@voguemagazine has just published an article calling for frat houses to be shut down. It contains some shocking statistics:
"Do frats, and the men who join them, have a monopoly on predatory behavior on campus? Absolutely not. But a 2007 study found that frat brothers are three times more likely to rape than other male students; and in a 2025 survey at Cornell University—where seven fraternity brothers have been accused of drugging and gang-raping a 20-year-old student (and sorority member herself) in 2024—roughly one in three women reported experiencing sexual assault during their time at the school."

A brilliantly terrrifying essay:
“focusing on gambling alone only tells part of the story of this strange new development in culture. We are living through a kind of postpandemic gamified speculative-trading apocalypse of which traditional gambling is only one horseman.”
Okay I had severely underestimated the extent to which fraternities—in all their scorched earth endlessly perpetuated toxic masculinity—run the United States. https://t.co/uPT8c8Ftc9
Substantial proportions of men engage in violent and abusive behaviour towards women, including acts that meet legal definitions of crime.
E.g., 29.3% of male college students in North America have perpetrated sexual assault.
Yet very few receive any kind of formal sanction.

Cornell case: The fact is, 1 in 5 women at university are sexually assaulted
A systematic review of available data, focusing on studies with large representative samples and multiple behaviorally specific questions, concludes 1 in 5 is an accurate average

Rape is extremely common. It's time we finally stop the mythology that rape is rare, rapists are outliers, & accept that sexual violence is normalized, common behavior from men. Only then can we address the issue & protect victims from rapists/apologists who attack victims.
Double-discrimination: Gynecologic or female-specific procedures are reimbursed at lower rates than comparable male-specific procedure. Hence, gyn doctors are paid less and hospitals are disincentivized to offer women's health services. @ASubramanian99

Cornell: The men who allegedly committed sexual assault are part of a substantial minority of men who do so.
29.3% of male university students in the USA and Canada have perpetrated some kind of sexual violence, finds a systematic review of studies over 2000-2017 among 25,524 men
Women Clearly Haven’t Ruined Enough Things Yet
Women haven’t ruined enough rapists’ lives. Or the justice system either. Or rape culture. Or the tech sector. Or the workplace. Or the private sphere. Or the medical system.

🧵 So I wrote the Wired story on the burnerverse, and as part of my reporting, I spent months reading and listening to the convos 20-something men have when they think no one is looking.
It's easy to dismiss the Cornell 7 as outliers, or super privileged frat bros, or byproducts of the Greek system. They're not.
It's also easy to say they're the worst-case scenario. That they represent the nadir of toxic masculinity, or a culture that teaches men from an early age that young women's bodies are disposable. But they don't.
That Snapchat thread? That's the norm. That's the baseline. That type of language is EXTREMELY consistent with the convos these guys are having when they think no one is paying attention. Because most of the time, no one is.
@ejdickson I do think we need to take more seriously how mediating the experience - sharing it on social media, the feedback loop from it, the abusive bonding, the way it rewards humiliation, all intersect with rape culture. That's what I really liked about your burnerverse piece.
@ejdickson I don't know if we should move beyond rape culture & patriarchy, bc those are key factors in who these boys violate and how they go about violating them. And in doing so, they're performing a v specific brand of masc. But I agree with a lot of what you're saying and ...
i understand and respect her point but there is something deeply uncomfortable about the rhetoric that rape “destroys” your body and “kills” your soul. There must be a way to speak about rape that doesn’t minimize its harm but also doesn’t assign this damagedness to victims
