I was privilaged to be invited by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) @FESonline @fesuganda to celebrate the amazing work done by the former Country Director for Uganda and Sudan MR #AchimVogt as he proceeds to his retirement and also welcome the new Country Director #MRHelmutFischer to the Pearl of Africa.

The guest of Honour Mr #Ramathan #Ngobi @rggoobi who also doubles as the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Finance and Planning @mofpedU gave a good presentation on Public finance and social justice. Highlighting on Uganda’s key priorities from close #70B USD to #500B USD .

He remphasised the need to put energy on Domestic Revenue mobilisation ,Attending to the worse off not to allow them to fall in total poverty ,Grow economy
Improve compliance and Revenue Mobilisation agenda among others.

✨Allow me to re-introduce myself🤝

I am Basalirwa Jonathan, a Public Investment Management (PIM) specialist and forward-looking certified Investment Analyst through the @queensu Cambridge Resources International (CRI) Executive Program on Investment Appraisal and Risk Analysis (PIAR I & II) in partnership with the @MakPIMCoE and @mofpedU. I hold a strong foundation in public finance, financial modelling, risk and stakeholder analysis, and economic decision-making.

I am a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) Graduate and currently an MSc. Investment and Risk Management (MIRM) student at @Makerere University’s College of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS) [@MakCoBAMS] . As a participant in the CFA Institute Research Challenge 2024/25, I was awarded for Outstanding Investment Research (Makerere University Team A).

Beyond technical expertise, I am deeply passionate about leadership, good governance, and youth economic empowerment. As a former student leader and 90th Guild Presidential Candidate and @UYDsecretariat/@DPSecretariat1 Official Flagbearer at Makerere University AY 2024/2025, I actively participated in university governance affairs and youth mobilisation. I currently serve as the Secretary General of @NimdUganda's Uganda Democracy Academy Alumni Association (UDAAA)/National Working Group (NWG) advancing the National Roadmap on Sustainable Youth Political Participation in Uganda (2026–2030) and the recently launched WYDE regional alumni East Africa Youth in Politics Roadmap (2026-2030) and as a Communications Officer for Global Peace Uganda [@GlobalPeace256] (an initiative of @ACCORD_online & @GlobalPeaceHQ). These roles have strengthened my commitment to inclusive leadership, constructive dialogue, and creating pathways that link economic opportunity with meaningful youth participation in governance and development.
I also serve as a Strategist at Afri-Economist Business Media [@afrieconomist], a youth-led platform focused on African business, finance and investment/entrepreneurship insights and economic development, where I contribute to content direction, business storytelling, and economic analysis, and moderate/co-host the monthly Afri-Economist Roundtable Discussions.

I am a passionate Keynote Speaker, Corporate Events MC/Host, Moderator, and Panelist, with a strong track record of facilitating high-level conversations on investment, public finance, youth leadership, governance, peacebuilding, and economic empowerment.

I am enthusiastic about driving impactful investment decisions in dynamic environments while contributing to systems that empower young people economically and strengthen democratic governance.

I am open to meaningful partnerships, networking, and collaboration opportunities in investment analysis, risk management, public finance, speaking engagements and youth-focused development initiatives.

I am honoured to join in at the @_AfricanUnion African Union Commission Headquaters in Addis Ababa Ethiopia 🇪🇹 at the Political Affairs, Peace and Security division @AUC_PAPS . Advocating for #SDG16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

I was able to understand how the division works and the different youth structures across Africa.
Peace is a very important element in our day to day lives.
I want to thank #MissGloria , #DrJosephine and #ProfessorTai for sparing time to share with us.

🔷Engagement with AU Political Affairs, Peace and Security.

I had an insightful interaction with the Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department of the African Union Commission. We discussed how peace, governance, and youth inclusion are interconnected for #Africa’s #stability. A key point emphasized: with over #60% of Africa’s population under 25 no peace or governance agenda can succeed without meaningfully involving young people.
This directly speaks to one of the pillars for the Regional Road map on Youth Participation in Politics in EAC.@NimdUganda @WeAreNIMD @NIMDKenya

🔷The Nexus: Governance & Youth Political Participation in EAC

This speaks directly to the EAC. In the East African Community, young people are the majority but remain on the margins of political and decision-making spaces. We see the gap in parliaments, local councils, and even in regional policy dialogues on EAC Vision 2050. Yet youth are driving innovation, digital advocacy, and cross-border trade. Without political participation and governance reforms that open space for youth, the EAC risks a generation that is affected by decisions but excluded from making them.

🔷Recommendations for the AU @_AfricanUnion & EAC @jumuiya
To bridge this gap,

1. Create and strengthen formal youth quotas and advisory roles in AU and EAC governance structures — not symbolic, but with decision-making power.
2. Invest in civic education and digital literacy so young people can engage in politics safely and meaningfully, and counter misinformation.
3. Fund youth-led peace and governance initiatives at community and regional level, especially those linking peacebuilding to jobs, climate action, and trade under AfCFTA @AfCFTA @SP_AfCFTA and EAC integration.

Peace is not just the absence of conflict. It’s inclusive governance. If the AU and EAC are serious about Agenda 2063 and Vision 2050, then young people must move from being observers to being architects. #Youth4Peace #EACVision2050 #TheAfricaWeWant #Governance #CivicEngagement

Earlier today, during day 2 of our WYDE Regional Alumni Exchange in Addis Ababa, together with other alumni from all East Africa Democracy Academies, we had a fruitful High-Level Dialogue on Youth Political Participation & Agenda 2063 with the Political Youth Peace and Security (YPS) Department of the African Union Commission - where we introduced our Regional Roadmap on East Africa Youth in Politics (2026-2030) to their team of representatives who also shared with us a number of frameworks and interventions being worked on by the African Union Commission, and we look forward to productive collaboration with the commission through the various entry points they discussed with our team.

Many thanks to the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy - Ethiopia team for making this happen. Onwards and upwards 🎊 🥂
