@jciikeja Now, how do you break the news of a terminal disease to a cancer patient who you know cannot afford therapy? This is one of the major frustrations of delivering care in a low-resource situation! To avoid all these issues, we therefore must not relent - advocacy & early detection!
@jciikeja The other major concern with regards to anxiety and depression in cancer diagnosis and management is the huge financial outlay associated with modern therapies (chemo and radio) - and also some issues around post-surgical disfiguration in cases of female breast cancer ...
@jciikeja@jci_nigeria@samteajay@talk2gabriella 3. maybe we shall be seeing some progress in cancer care and control in Nigeria in the nearest future!
May I on this note add, while we are waiting, please send your loved ones to @CancerOptimal for #FreeCancerScreening every Friday - we are located at Surulere and Ikorodu, Lagos
@jciikeja@jci_nigeria@samteajay@talk2gabriella 2. @Fmohnigeria & @AsoRock should be able to also provide us some insight as to future plans in this area and field especially in the new political dispensation of 2019-2023. Good news is that Prof @IsaacFAdewole launched a cancer control plan last year (2018-2022) in Abuja, so..
@jciikeja@jci_nigeria@samteajay@talk2gabriella 1. I am not sure there are any of such programs and if there are any, they are NOT enough! Cancer NGOs are trying to rally round and provide support in as many ways as possible but again, the needs and demands on them outweigh resources available! My NGO @CancerOptimal is trying
@jciikeja@jci_nigeria@talk2gabriella@samteajay@FemiDavis@chummy8t8 3. Thanks to recent advances in diagnostics and medical innovation, multiple myeloma patients are living longer than ever before. #MultipleMyeloma is the second most commonly diagnosed blood cancer, after non-Hodgkin lymphoma, yet few people know much about this deadly disease!
@jciikeja@jci_nigeria@talk2gabriella@samteajay@FemiDavis@chummy8t8 2. The most common cause of death related to #MultipleMyeloma is infection, with pneumonia being the most common fatal infection. Other common causes of death are bleeding (from low platelet counts), complications of bone fractures, kidney failure, and blood clots in the lungs
@jciikeja@jci_nigeria@talk2gabriella@samteajay@FemiDavis@chummy8t8 1. Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. Multiple myeloma causes cancer cells to accumulate in the bone marrow, it is not bone cancer
@jciikeja@jci_nigeria@samteajay@FemiDavis 5. A bone marrow biopsy (from his sternum - chest bone) done by a competent haematologist was all that was needed to confirm the diagnosis. But by this time, it was too late! He died at LUTH a few weeks later! One of the reasons I have dedicated my career to cancer prevention!
@jciikeja@jci_nigeria@samteajay@FemiDavis 4. I do have a personal story about #leukaemia - my younger brother at age 17 died from it. He had only weakness and fainting attacks and they kept treating him for malaria, typhoid and blood transfusions!
