The deeper I dig into histamine, the more I recognize it’s probably the driver for a lot of dysfunctional behavior in people—ADHD, OCD, procrastination, insomnia, rumination.
Histamine is one of the core arousal/wakefulness neurotransmitters and gates dopamine, acetylcholine, glutamate, and the stress axis via H1/H3 receptors. Too little histamine means underaroused; too much means hypervigilant.
In cases of low-level (or even full-blown) allergies and dysregulated mast cell degranulation, chronic nighttime exposure leads to poor sleep. Downregulated H1 receptor expression from chronic agonism then causes poor activation when needed, leading to ADHD and/or procrastination—a functional histamine deficit.
Similarly, chronic excessive histamine drive leads to OCD and rumination because the mind cannot relax in its hypervigilant state, which also causes histamine-driven insomnia.
Two tools that can help:
1. Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine with antiserotonin effects that blocks histamine at the receptor and blunts the cortisol effect driven by excess serotonin (from gut microbes). It also stimulates appetite, so keep that in mind. More of a sledgehammer than...
2. Ketotifen, a mast cell stabilizer, doesn’t cause the drowsiness that cyproheptadine does. It prevents pathological mast cell degranulation and is good for low-grade allergies.
And of course, the Ray Peat Carrot Salad™️ and well-cooked white button mushrooms will bind bacterial endotoxin in the gut, which could be driving the histamine dysfunction leading to the above symptoms.
Make no mistake, there is no external God or Saviour for you to pray to on the outside.

But once they change their identity to someone who feels worthy regardless of their material successes all of a sudden feels worthy.
And when you feel worthy it makes it a hell of a lot easier to achieve success.

So why not choose to believe in something that empowers you and makes your life better?
The only thing that separates successful people from unsuccessful people is just a few mindset tweaks.

It’s actually one of the easier things in life to do.

But under inflammation…it turns into something that does the opposite.
When you're healthy: tryptophan -> NAD + serotonin (and melatonin).
However, when you're inflamed, it creates quinolinic acid, which is an NMDA receptor agonist.
Potent anti-depressant drugs like ketamine, memantine, etc, inhibit the NMDA receptor.
Inflammation (especially in the gut) is the main stimulator of the pathway that creates quinolinic acid.
Fix your gut and bring down inflammation and watch your inner tension, racing thoughts, restlessness and anxiety disappear.
Can’t handle stress?
It’s not a mindset problem.
Also not a box breathing or Wim Hof breathing deficiency.
It’s simply because low grade inflammation is hypersensitizing your glutamate and sympathetic nervous system, putting you in overdrive.
So it feels like you’re caffeinated all the time. And you’re so tired of being turned on all the time, but you simply can’t turn off.
It’s an inflammatory problem.
Fix inflammation and you fix stress intolerance.
People with ADHD are usually magnesium and GABA deficient.
