@jonatha_berry@DOmowale I think I’m making it pretty clear that my red line would be crossed if I were asked to admire, excuse, or reduce the immoral actions of a historical figure, especially for a historically consequential person.
@jonatha_berry@DOmowale It is a correct term to use for someone like Washington. He owned slaves from a young age, but his views changed after the war. He privately opposed slavery and supported plans for gradual abolition. He also enacted the constitution that protected slavery.
@jonatha_berry@DOmowale Washington can be historically great and morally compromised. Obama is admiring his role in building the republic that we reside in, but it does not mean he is making an excuse for his slavery. It means recognizing his accomplishments and failures, both of which affect us today.
@TakeOffThomas This is a false equivalency. He built the framework of the presidency and set a lasting precedent for a democratic republic. His failures, such as participating in slavery, are a reminder of the ongoing struggle to realize its promise. Idi Admin has nothing to do with this.
“The founders fell terribly short of the Declaration’s promise.”
Former President Barack Obama took aim at America’s founders during the opening of his presidential center, arguing they left slavery intact and limited political rights despite laying the groundwork for the nation.
The remarks come just days before the United States marks its 250th anniversary, as Obama urged Americans to continue the work of building a “more perfect” union.
@Independent The article wasn’t a bad read but this specific headline of the tweet and the article doesn’t make any sense. Are black people a monolith?
@GPM316 His movie is about to make a billion and his Spotify numbers are off the charts. I don’t think the Netflix doc will do anything especially if the leaving neverland doc from hbo failed to make a big impact.
@dauntlesseskimo Maeve. She has no unique powers. She has strength and durability like every other supe m the seven. Everyone else has their own unique abilities.
