Gordillo's family fled from Peru and came to the U.S. as the Communist Party of Peru waged war against the government.

The DSA's platform is also calling for:
— eliminating checks and balances

— establish a wealth tax
— replacing the presidency and Supreme Court with a new executive and judiciary subordinate to and chosen by Congress
— a 32-hour work week with no reduction in pay or benefits
