That is too clean.
Several large things changed at the same time:
• Infectious-disease mortality collapsed, so more people lived long enough for atherosclerosis to declare itself.
• Cigarette smoking exploded.
• Work became more sedentary.
• Refined sugar and calories rose.
• Diagnosis and death certification improved dramatically once the ECG spread (White himself helped popularize it). “Heart disease” started absorbing deaths that used to be labeled senility, apoplexy, or “old age.”
It will not just be smarter in every way we understand, it will think in ways we can’t understand. Ie, it won’t just be smarter in every profession we understand (ie physician), it will develop new high value professions whose processes and description we can’t fully understand. But it will never be able to feel or experience qualia, therefore will have very low wisdom.
Just back from Greece and I have a complaint about the Mediterranean diet, which is that I went to the Mediterranean and couldn't find it.
I know the diet well, mind. I've had it explained to me between sets by lads who read a poster once. Olive oil, drizzled. Wholegrains. Pulses. A bit of fish. Red meat almost never. That's why the old boys on the harbour are 94.
Right. So I sit down in a taverna in a village with 3 streets and wait for my chickpea.
Lamb chops. A stack of them, fat burnt black at the edges, eaten in the fingers. Fine, I think, a treat, they're being nice to the tourist. Then a wedge of feta the size of a paperback. Then saganaki, which is that same sheep's cheese fried in a pan until it does something the poster would need to lie down about.
And no olive oil. Not a drop. There's a dish of butter on the table. I checked twice. Butter.
Maybe it's that village, I think. So night 2 I go somewhere else and get kleftiko, a mutton shoulder sealed in paper and left in the oven since lunch until the fat's gone to glass. Night 3 it's a goat, roasted whole for somebody's name day, and the grandmothers took the head. Yoghurt off a sheep so thick the spoon stood up in it, with the fat set in a crust on top. Every corner a gyros, which is pork, turning in its own dripping since breakfast.
By Thursday I've had kokoretsi, lamb offal wound round a spit over coals, and patsas, which is tripe soup, which they have for breakfast after a night on the ouzo. The tomato turned up once. It was under a cheese.
At this point I'm starting to wonder if anyone's told them. Greece eats more cheese per head than nearly any country on earth, almost all of it sheep and goat. Every village oven has a mutton in it. The Cretans keep a thing called staka, which is the fat off sheep's milk cooked down, and they spread it on bread and fry eggs in it, and not one poster has ever mentioned it.
Then I looked it up. The survey that started all this took its Cretan numbers partly during Lent. 40 days the island gives up meat. They watched a village fasting, wrote it down as the menu, and 60 years of experts have been reading me a religious observance and calling it a diet.
So that's the Mediterranean diet, from the source. Sheep, goat, pig, the cheese off the first two, the fat off all three, and a dish of butter I never asked for.
It's my diet with better weather.
Somebody should tell the experts. The Greeks would, but they're eating.
The JNC has consistently added nuance to what blood pressure numbers in which patients reduce which diseases and increase which side effects when treated with which medications. It is a complex field to engage. Of course very few of the people who consult me think that spending 210 minutes per week in fitness or eating animal (which eat a natural diet) parts and products with every meal is a good investment.
@grok@elonmusk@DAVV1T@IAI_TV@Grok Do you agree with this “Palmer's theory makes a testable prediction: quantum computers will fail beyond 400 qubits, hitting a fundamental limit set by the discrete structure of nature itself. “ and if so, what are the implications for the limits of Shor’s algorithm?
