Dolly Parton was Miley Cyrus's godmother for 33 years. She took the job before Miley was even born.

Back in 1992, Billy Ray Cyrus was touring with Dolly on the Achy Breaky Heart run. A Kentucky boy and a Tennessee girl, they got close fast. When he found out he was having a daughter, he told Dolly she had to be the godmother. She said she'd be honored.

So when Aunt Dolly walked into the Hannah Montana closet in 2006, Disney had accidentally hired a real family. She did three episodes, and one of them was literally titled "I Will Always Loathe You."

The way they stayed in touch is the detail I can't get over. Dolly never used phones. She sent faxes. Miley's team would receive the fax at her lawyer's office, scan it, and text her the image. Grandma technology carrying godmother love for three decades.

Two Mother's Days ago, Dolly faxed her: "How much do I love you? As much as my heart can hold and as far as my arms can reach."

Then in 2023, at 77, Dolly recorded a rock cover of Wrecking Ball with Miley and quietly changed one lyric, so that Miley's line ended with the title of Dolly's own signature song. The song she wrote in 1972. The same one she'd sung on her goddaughter's Disney show.

Miley said one of their last conversations was about music and metamorphosis. That was the whole relationship. The most famous woman in country music spent 33 years teaching one kid how to keep changing without losing herself.
