Hayden Buckley of Tupelo, MS opens up his 3rd PGA season this week.  Last season he ended up 60th on the FedEx points list, had 4 top-10 and 6 top-20 finishes, and earned $2,929,779.  FWIW, here's my prediction for his 2024 season:

Hayden Buckley--A Tale of Two Seasons:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.  Buckley was playing the best golf of his career up until May 21st of the 2022-23 season.  After 18 events he had 4 top-10's (T5, 2nd, T10 & T5) and 6 top-20 finishes.  He was #35 on the FedEx points list, ranked #71 in the world, and had already earned $2,832,411.  Then came the worst stretch of his PGA career.

After May 21, Buckley finished the season with results of CUT, CUT, CUT, CUT, 6 weeks off with a torn muscle, T52, CUT, T64, 72nd, T59, and a CUT.  During this stretch he fell from #35 to #60 on the FedEx list, from #71 to #118 in the world rankings, and earned less than $100,000.

In Buckley's case you have to break down 2022-23 into two seasons.  In the first 18 events he played like a guy who should have become eligible for all the 2024 Signature Events and should be well within the top-100 in the world.  During the last 10 events he played like someone who should have lost his tour card at the end of the year.  Which version of Buckley will we see in 2024?

Rob Bolton has Buckley at #149 on the fantasy list and wrote, "Although he made six starts after returning from a torn muscle in his ribs, the jury remains out on projected impact, both good and bad."  Fair enough, but Buckley returned to play back in August and he made the cut in 3 of his 5 fall events.  In those events he was driving the ball well so it doesn't seem like the injury will negatively impact the strength of his game.

My gut feeling is that this year we will see Buckley returning to the form he showed to start out last season.  Unfortunately, since he isn't exempt into the limited field Signature Events, cracking the top-50 is going to be more difficult this season.  It will help a lot if he gets off to a fast start this week.
