For newcomers to Islay and Bowmore, the Bowmore 12 is a great entry point, with a good measure of balance and complexity. While the nose opens with the smokey sea of Islay, the taste and palate introduces an element of sweetness, making it easy-to-drink and easy to like.

Moving from the fruits and sweetness of Speyside, and into the peat and smokiness of Islay. Starting with the oldest distillery on the island, Bowmore, which is believed to be established in 1779 by a local merchant.

Since then, the distillery has changed hands a number of times, and is currently part of Suntory, the Japanese multi-national drinks conglomerate. That said, their whiskies still embody the iconic balance of smoke and sea that has come to symbolize Islay whiskies

That said, you don't need $1.9m to enjoy a good Macallan. For new drinkers, the Double Cask 12 year old is a great starter. Aged in sherry casks, expect notes of dried fruit, caramel, and vanilla. Almost like Christmas!

We mentioned Macallan a few tweets back, and they are one of the best-selling and famed whisky brands around. One of the original Speyside farm distilleries, it is believed that it was to be operating since the 1700s, but was only licensed and legalized in 1824.

While now synonymous with single malt scotch, they were hugely important for blended whiskies until the 1980s, where a market downtown pushed them to focus their production. Recently, the focus has again shifted to more luxury whiskies such as 50 or 60 yr whiskies.
