I think this is a flawed approach. Forecasting capabilities should mostly be based on macro trends, not micro level stories. People rarely understand mechanisms well enough, and expert adjacent observers are especially prone to overestimating their comprehension. It’s more effective to use simple heuristics and extrapolate robust trends. Ray Kurzweil didn’t need to predict deep learning, transformers, or GPUs to foresee powerful AI in the 2020s.

This is consistent with Philip Tetlock’s findings on the poor forecasting performance of domain experts and the distinctive cognitive style of superforecasters.
