David Carr once asked if I wanted to come up to the new Times newsroom. I said no. I've thought about it for 20 years.
A new essay on expulsion, audits that never happen, the people who cross the line anyway, and why redemption doesn't come on letterhead.

Maybe it was the movie. Maybe it was the actress I’d already dismissed. Maybe it was the theater that came back to life. I’ve stopped trying to choose.

Meta’s data could’ve been a gift to anyone who cares about human wellbeing. Instead, it became a mirror of human distress — and Meta built its culture around the reflection. No surprise the company is now paying the same price it’s inflicted on society.

Why is change so hard?

There is such peace in accepting life’s blessings and tragedies equally. In trimputh and tragedy, our gains and our grief, we grow toward something greater.
Ellie Taylor sat with me and opened the door to what life looks like when every moment matters. The way she talks about her daughter, her body, her fear, and her hope… it stays with you long after the conversation ends.

Today, we honor a legacy of hope, equality, and justice. Let’s reflect on Dr. King’s dream! Together, we can create the change! #MLKDay#LoveInAction
Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates a man known for his inspiration, dedication, and a message that is just as important today. However, he is less known for having lived his life with depression. The greatness he is known for, and the character of his heart were not determined (or undermined) by a diagnosis. That drive inside all of us seeks out the light, and King, to many, is a beacon in the dark.
Reflecting on the end of the year as I join listeners, I return to a familiar theme— in a world with suffering, we should not discount the pain of even our worst adversaries.

I wrote this piece on gun control in the wake of the Brown University killings and there have been some negative reactions. So, I want to tell an additional story.
This summer I went on a trip where we would be in danger because of wildlife and criminals unhappy we were doing a search for a missing person. I considered buying a firearm but we lucked out when a former Army service member and off duty police officer joined us to provide force protection.
But it struck me how easy it would be for me - a person who has been hospitalized twice for psychiatric reasons and who has had serious bouts of depression, and suicidal thoughts within the year - to buy a handgun.
My piece is not about a nationwide gun ban, but about doing things that make it harder for people like me to put a firearm in our hands.

Australia will soon ban its youth from popular services like TikTok and Instagram, becoming the world’s first democracy to carry out such a crackdown in response to growing concerns about social media’s harms. It’s likely to be the first of many. ... The measures are spurring an increasing number of governments to seek to hold social media firms to account for toxic content and cyberbullying.

“For me, this work is personal,” said Marcus Schmit, executive director of NAMI Minnesota and a proud Red Wing native. “Growing up here, I know how much communities like ours rely on trusted support systems. When someone experiences a mental health crisis, getting the right help at the right time can change everything. Minnesota’s Mobile Crisis Response Teams provide in-person professional care with no out-of-pocket costs. If you or someone you love is in crisis, call your local Mobile Crisis Team instead of 911 whenever possible.”
