The body is barely cold, the widow is still trying to comprehend her loss, the orphans are still grieving and this uncle has already reported for duty as Chief Executive Officer of the funeral.

Every Ugandan family has this uncle. He doesn’t believe widows and orphans need time to grieve; they apparently need his instructions, opinions, authority and unsolicited management.

He arrives at the funeral with the confidence of a man who personally owns death, the family and the microphone. If possible he would want permission before anyone took a breath.

And from those facial expressions and dramatic body movements, you can almost smell the difficulty coming. This is not a man who came to comfort the bereaved. He came to remind everyone that without him, apparently, nobody knows how to bury their own relative.
