Whenever ASIO says that is has “credible evidence”, just remember that ASIO tabled an entire report to Parliament with “credible evidence” in 2004 that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. I guess their evidence wasn’t so credible after all. #AUSPOL

There is no way to assess the veracity of ASIO’s claim that Iran was behind at least two anti-semitic attacks in Australia. It is unlikely evidence will ever be released to the public given the US was also involved in helping to unpick “the links between the alleged crimes and the commanders in Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps.”

It is unclear what Iran stood to gain from these attacks In Australia, at a time when it was facing its own security threats from Israel and, subsequently, the United States.

So why will there be widespread doubts and claims of nefarious false flag operations by Israel in response to these revelations?

Eminent Jewish historian Avi Shlaim asserts that the Zionist movement actively orchestrated terrorist attacks in Iraq at the beginning of the 1950s to pressure the local Jewish community to emigrate to Israel, challenging the narrative that anti-semitism was the sole driver of the exodus.

In his memoir, Three Worlds: Memoir of an Arab-Jew, Shlaim details how Zionist underground activities fanned the flames of anti-semitism and argues that the bombings were a calculated effort to quicken the emigration of Iraqi Jews.

It’s this history, and similar events, which feed public doubt and cynical scepticism, while reinforcing conspiracy theories that are just as difficult to debunk.

I’m catching up with Professor Shlaim in Oxford next month and will share his thoughts on this news.
