There’s a new TV series on Netflix set in our local village Bréantrá or Union Hall.
In the series, the fictional village is called
Bodkin.
It got us wondering, what if this was a real Irish placename?
Could it have derived from Bod Cionn?

Joking aside, there is actually a Bodkin placename in Ireland and it’s in Co. Galway.
It’s said to derive from the Norman surname de Bodekin.

Published in thirteen volumes between 1993 and 2007, the Mizen Journal was rightly known for the high standard of the articles they contained. A selection of these Journals are now available via Coolim Books. See https://t.co/o7A3SUa5i9
@intothewild45 Put a beart of straw into the pond and it will clear up the algae in no time.
It doesn’t need to be much but tie it up with string so you can retrieve it afterwards.
‘The Skellig Lists: A Folk Tradition concerning Marriage’, by Shane Lehane is our next talk on Wednesday 31 January at the GAA Pavilion at 8pm. A really interesting subject! All are welcome.
#OnThisDay 1661 Oliver Cromwell's body was exhumed, dragged through the streets of London, hanged in chains at Tyburn, beheaded & his body thrown into a pit. His head displayed on a pole on the roof of Westminster Hall until 1685.
A great day for the parish.

Muine Uí Mhothlacháin is our local 'money' placename and it can be interpreted as the thicket of the Uí Mhothlacháin family.
It was later anglicised to Moneyvollahane and it is where @CastlehavenGAA have their main pitch.
The element money may represent two different words in Irish place-names: muine‘brake or thicket’ and mónaidh, an oblique form of móin, ‘moor or bog’. There is also another word monadh ‘mountain, heath, etc.’ which is normally found in Scotland. https://t.co/fD3Kn7MofR
