Conspiracy to Exit Itsekiri lands from Western Region to Delta State: The Urhobo and Ijaw Scheme Against Itsekiri, 1957-2025

In the 1960s, Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh penned a letter to Dennis Osadebay, following the Itsekiri's resolute refusal to depart from the Western Region. The letter warned of a sinister plot to seize Itsekiri lands, declaring that the Itsekiri would rather remain outside the newly proposed Mid-West Region to safeguard their ancestral territories.

Approximately 32-33 years later, in 1992 and 1993, the Urhobo launched violent assaults against the Itsekiri, mere months after Delta State's creation in 1991. These attacks were a calculated attempt to wrest control of Warri from the Itsekiri. In response, the Itsekiri demanded a separate state encompassing the Warri Local Government Areas (LGAs) to protect their heritage.

37 years after the letter, from 1997 to 1998, the Ijaw perpetrated genocidal attacks against the Itsekiri, prompting a prolonged retaliation that lasted until 2004. These conflicts resulted in over 2,000 Itsekiri deaths, marking a tragic escalation in the struggle for territorial control.

In 1999, 39 years after the letter, the Delta State government, in collusion with @inecnigeria, manipulated electoral boundaries to grant the Urhobo voting wards equal to those of the Itsekiri in Warri South. This fraudulent act disregarded the Itsekiri’s clear majority status and their historical ownership of the land, falsely equating them with the minority Urhobo population.

53 years after the letter, in 2013, the Ijaw launched another assault, killing 11 Itsekiri on their own ancestral lands, further intensifying the threat to Itsekiri lands.

65 years after Chief Okotie-Eboh’s warning, in 2025, the Delta State government, alongside the Urhobo and Ijaw, orchestrated a coup in collaboration with @inecnigeria. This plot stripped the Itsekiri of their political influence over the three Warri LGAs—centuries-old Itsekiri ancestral lands and kingdom. Through a fraudulent ward delineation process, chaired by an Ijaw woman, control was deceitfully handed to the Urhobo and Ijaw.

The fears articulated by Chief Okotie-Eboh have come to fruition, revealing a long-standing conspiracy to erode Itsekiri lands and identity. Yet, we stand unwavering. The Itsekiri will never allow these schemes to succeed. We will fight to our last breath to defend our rightful heritage and ensure that no one seizes what is ours.

We will never let them prevail—never.
