These constant racist declarations about Black people get brushed off as merely offensive but they are actually dangerous. They normalize racist stereotypes of Black people as not just being disproportionately criminal but as a community — as a race — embracing criminality and violence. Leading up to an election where Republicans are also running on fears of rising crime and law and order, what do you think is the policy result of this thinking if Republicans win? The comfort with publicly equating criminality with Black people isn’t cute, it isn’t hip, it calls forth some of the most harmful racists beliefs this nation has about Black people, the type that leads to police killings, disproportionate school discipline and mass incarceration.
