It was so nice to meet up with some of the Grass To Gas parters in person again at the World Congress of Genetics Applied to Livestock Production in Rotterdam this month. Some great data sets and interesting results starting to emerge.

@SRUC staff visited @TeagascSheep Athenry last week for training to use portable accumulation chambers (PAC) to measure methane from sheep, before they get the first UK PACs from @AgResearch this summer. The Irish research flock looked relaxed after their short stay in the PACs.

The future direction of the Scottish sheep industry will come under the spotlight at an online event, The Scottish Sheep Industry Conference, which has been organised by SRUC and takes place on 18 and 19 January 2022

The @TeagascSheep team’s Portable Accumulation Chambers have made their debut this week on Irish commercial farms, measuring the methane output of 300 ewes on a @SheepIreland Central Progeny Test farm for @GrasstoGas

from @TeagascSheep are using SF6 tracer techniques, funded by @GreenBreedDAFM & @GrasstoGas. SF6 allows for continuous measurement of methane emissions from individual sheep grazing at pasture.

These ewes’ emissions are also measured in Portable Accumulation Chambers at @TeagascSheep for comparison with SF6. Individual daily pasture intake is estimated using the n-alkane technique. @GreenBreedDAFM & @GrasstoGas. @SheepIreland

After 1 year delay, @BritishTexel cross lambs now on site @SRUC and being recorded for individual feed intake. CT and ultrasound scanning this week, and after 6 weeks on trial, to assess body composition changes & rumen volumes. Which lambs will be most efficient?
