@softcorgamegirl Well, in my case, a lot of frustration and character death and getting stuck, because I didn't save for a while before getting into that area...
So, I started the game again.
@softcorgamegirl Grease really slows his generals down, and Entangle too. Sort the Owlbear out, otherwise that is a big unpleasant surprise.
I used sooo many Summon spells in this game, just to swarm enemies and keep them away from my characters.
But this fight is very tricky.
@Dystopian_Dawn@TheBadUncle Nice.
I picked up the Dolmenwood setting from them and it looks particularly good.
In the New Year I'll be putting my BX campaign on hold for a bit to played through a few of those adventures.
@TheBadUncle We play in a mega-dungeon, every session a new dive and who ever turns up plays. It's easy to bring in new players in this situation. Lots of people have heard of D&D, but not had the chance to play or have been put off by lots of rules.
@TheBadUncle As a DM who brings in new players every two sessions or so, the B/X version of NG is perfect for me. I run 'race as class' for simplicity and I've not had one 5e player complain about lack of options. After nearly 18 months of one campaign using this, I'm very happy.
@SlagNotSlug @BlackDragonCan Also, signposting an encounter doesn't mean that they will take notice. The signposting could be at any time prior, even sessions before. They might just click after the entire party is charred remains on a dungeon wall.
@SlagNotSlug @BlackDragonCan It's not about attempting to preserve them, but allowing for a variety of encounter types and engagements with the world. Players are very able to turn crossing a small pit into a lethal encounter, they don't need any extra help from me.
@BlackDragonCan Signposting

Not all encounters are combat / fatal. Example: a dragon encounter at low levels could result in the deaths of some hirelings and wounds, then it tires of playing with the toys and leaves. The PCs are left astounded and scared. Now they know the danger.
@AlysssaHazel All of my male friends read, just not all of them read literary fiction, maybe a handful of the classics. But generally they'd prefer to work through some epic fantasy series or psychology theory than tackle War and Peace.
@Blackmoor_Film My western marches style games have a week inbetween dungeon dives for the characters to recover and do several downtime tasks (research, builds, resource searches, cure diseases, etc...). No resting in the dungeon.
