I just read a story about a woman that really makes you pause and think about the pressure around “japa” in today’s world.

She was 31, living in Lagos and earning about ₦45k a month while working in a boutique company. On paper, she was managing life, but in reality she felt stuck. Around her, people were relocating abroad, posting new lives, new opportunities, new beginnings. And like many others, she started to feel like she was being left behind.

At some point, she decided she wanted the same chance.

She spoke to a travel agent who told her the full relocation process would cost about ₦10 million. That figure was far beyond her reach, so she chose a different path she would do it herself.

She started small. She used her ₦500k savings to begin her visa application and, against her expectations, she got a 6-month visa on her first attempt. That success gave her hope and pushed her further.

Then things escalated.

She sold her late father’s land for ₦5 million. She borrowed from more than a dozen people. She sold nearly everything she owned TV, generator, wardrobe, bed until she was literally sleeping on clothes on the floor.

As time ran out and pressure mounted, she made more desperate decisions. She secretly sublet her apartment for ₦700k, bought a flight ticket for ₦1.9 million, and even sent ₦2 million to someone abroad who promised to sort out accommodation.

By the time she was done, she had just ₦120k left to her name.

Her family saw her off at the airport. There were photos, videos, emotions everyone believing this was the beginning of a new chapter. On the plane, she kept reassuring herself that life was finally about to change.

If she wakes at 3am she has no data to push her cortisol up with, so she goes back to sleep.

He wrote the firmware and built the enclosure himself. No team, no procurement, no Meta resources. He posted the result on Instagram and said it worked better than he expected.

The design move most CEOs would never run is the personal one. The instinct is to outsource a family problem to a specialist. A sleep coach. A doctor. A consumer electronics startup with a Series B and a marketing budget.

Mark intervened at a specific link in the chain. Time data hitting Priscilla's brain at 3am was what broke sleep. The phone got moved off the nightstand and replaced with a box that physically cannot deliver that data.

The box has no clock. That's the entire product.

Since receiving the ₦10 million ransom payment, Abba's abductors have completely cut off all communication with his family.

Given the situation, the family has decided not to pay any more ransom (including the bikes his abductors requested after the initial payment).

Abba’s family are preparing to hold his Janaza prayer (Gha’ib) on Friday, 6th March, in accordance with Islamic rules.

Abba’s family wishes to express their profound gratitude to everyone who offered support, prayers, donations, and kind words during this ordeal. May the Lord be pleased with you all and reward your generosity abundantly.
