Today, at 11:00 a.m., my world will come to a screeching halt. I am writing this post in bed, lying next to Baxter for the last morning we’ll spend together. After twelve and a half years of being best friends, Elizabeth and I are saying goodbye to him today. And while there aren’t enough words to express what he means to me, I wanted to share some thoughts about him.
There’s a great quote about dogs that I always thought was nearly perfect. “Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.” I agree with the quote, but it’s also important to remember that for the adopter, the world also changes forever.
A dog is just a small part of a hectic life for most people. Since the day I met and rescued Baxter on June 12, 2012, my world has revolved around him. From moves to Denver and California. Through meeting my wife. Starting WhsikerCloud. Getting Married. Selling my company. It’s all been a whirlwind that, at times, was too much to bear. But I could always count on one thing: my best friend was right there to lie with me on the couch, go for a long walk, or sit and listen. After every trip, I would walk in the door and he would explode with joy to see me. I always made it a point to match his excitement because I wanted him to feel that, too.
Over the last 48 hours, I’ve told Baxter that he’s the love of my life hundreds of times. He knows it already. And he’s spent every minute of his life making me feel that back. Every single time I walked into another room, took the trash out, went to grab a drink from the fridge, he would jump up and say, “Where are we going?” In fact, I cannot remember when he and I were home, and he wasn’t within five feet of me at all times.
Here’s to you, Baxter—the love of my life. The guy who fought like hell over the last six months because he didn't want to leave us. We will see each other again, my boy.

I’ve been using @useorigin to keep me honest about where our money actually goes.
This week, the app hit me with a Thanksgiving prompt:
“Feast on your financial wins.”
So I let it tell me what I should be grateful for with my money this year.
Then I asked:
“What financial advice can I pass on to my family?”
It turned my own choices into talking points:
Automate investing so you can’t talk yourself out of it
Spend on things you really care about, not just whatever’s in your cart
And yeah, I traveled way less this year, which hurts my soul, but helped my future self (bleh)

It's literally that simple.
An @Airbnb cofounder sent this email on a Saturday in 2007. The company made $2.1 billion in revenue in Q2 of 2022. And look at that—it all started with a random email on a Saturday.

I started using @useorigin to track spending and learned two things:
1. We spend way less on eating out than groceries (shocking).
2. Our food budget is actually excellent.
Which means I’m either a financial genius… or just really good at letting other people pick up the check. I was also able to see that our power bill has been increasing monthly for a year, so I'm reaching out to our utility company. Love this data! #OriginPartner
I've been spending my days talking to founders from all walks of life, and I always walk away inspired.
Many see starting a company as a risk, but to me, getting a job is the bigger gamble to me. It's incredible what happens when you take a chance on your own ideas.
Big day — Origin just launched their AI financial advisor 🚀

I asked it if I'm spending too much money on matcha, and the answer was shocking.
Also, this launch video is a 10/10. WOW.
