“I…” her voice dropped to a quiet whisper, one that was just loud enough for Alex to hear.
“I don’t like being vulnerable Alex, I don’t want people seeing that. Makes me uncomfortable.” She paused, swallowing another mouthful of her drink.
“Yeah, not really used to it, no.”
“Well not everyone gets to see the real you. Maybe if they did.. more people would like you. But not everyone matters anyway.”
Alex shrugged her shoulders, running one hand through her hair whilst lifting her glass of wine to her lips once more.
“Not used to saying them words -
Gene’s brows knitted together as she watched the other woman speak.
“I didn’t realise that I made you feel safe, I always just thought I pissed you off. I’m not exactly a likeable person.” She paused for a moment, getting her words together.
“I, uh. Care very deeply for you.”
“No, Gene. You made me feel safe in a world I felt completely alone in. Every bad thing that happened, I never had to look back to see where you were. Because you were right there.”
Alex cleared her throat and leaned back a little. “Guess I’ve still not learnt to shut up.”
“Yeah, I just thought you were makin’ do with me because I was the better option in comparison to the rest of ‘em at work.”Gene swallowed deeply, she wasn’t usually this open, however she had drunk enough to make her lose her filter.
“Is that what you really thought? That I didn’t actually like you that much?” Alex whispered, head tilted ever so slightly.
“I was completely alone when I first came here. It’s a miserable place but you make it bearable.”
“It’s because I’m a grumpy prick.” Gene replied, taking a mouthful of her drink, the amber liquid warming her chest.
“I always thought you didn’t actually like me very much.”
“Trust me you do. People don’t take me serious, but they do you.” It bugged Alex some days but never stopped her from doing her job.
“ it was either Fenchurch West.. or Manchester. So yes I did.. I didn’t want to go to another city and be alone.. without you.”
“I don’t think I do, I’m just rude and unpleasant. It seems to get the job done.” Gene shrugged again, picking up the new glass of whiskey that had been placed down in front of her.
“You really took the job so you would be close to me?”
“I couldn’t stay as your DI forever, Gene. I took the position at Fenchurch West so i could still be close to you.” Alex admitted with a sigh, downing the rest of her wine afterwards.
“I wasn’t at the beginning, you make it look so bloody easy.” She chuckled but placed a hand -
“I thought you were just trying to get away from me, didn’t want to be a bother.” Gene shrugged.
“You’re doing so well, and it just seemed like I would be interrupting or something.” She gave her a slight sad smile, whispering the next words.
“I missed your company a lot.”
Alex glanced down briefly whilst Gene spoke, the small smile returning to lips for only a moment. She hadn’t expected to actually hear her company was missed.
“And here i thought you would be glad to see the back of me. Just because i got promoted, it didn’t mean we had to -
“I was kinda hopin’ but here you are.” Gene let out a faux exasperated sigh.
“I’m just not doin’ too well at the moment. It’s been rough few weeks and what can I say, I miss ya company.”
“Did you really think a transfer and promotion would change that? I always will be a pain in your ar*e.” Alex smiled a little.
“Come on, you know you can talk to me. That won’t ever change.”
“Nothin’ is wrong with me Bols, I’m just getting old.” Gene made eye contact with the younger woman again.
“You’re a pain in my ar*e, you know that you know?” The blonde rolled her eyes, Alex was very good at reading her and she couldn’t stand it.
“Oh cut the bull sh*t, Gene. I know you.” Alex shook her head, grabbed her glass of wine and sat right next to the woman.
“No one gets to invade your turf, no one. What’s going on with you?”
“Couldn’t give a stuff, I’m gettin’ too old to give a damn.” Gene shrugged, she had been working non-stop and when she wasn’t working she was at home drinking until she passed out.
“Or maybe I’m a bit more relaxed than I used to be.”
“Gene Hunt not speaking to anyone? Now there’s a first.” Alex finished her drink then ordered another one.
“Had noticed. I mean my team was even on your turf the other day, not a single reaction to it.”
“I haven’t really spoken to anyone if I’m goin’ to be honest Bols.” Gene let out an amused chuckle. She hated herself.
“Mostly keep to myself these days, I use Luigi’s as an excuse to get out of the house. Otherwise it’s just work and home.”
“I honestly wouldn’t know, Gene. You’ve hardly spoken to me since i got promoted.” Alex sighed as she swirled the wine around in her glass.
“Never thought i would ever get peace and quiet.”
“Same ol’ grumpy arsehole here, nothing changed with me. Well, not much anyway.” Gene promptly swallowed the contents of her glass and gestured for a new one.
“What were you expecting?”
“Nothing fancy about it, it’s what I used to bring when I worked with you.”
Alex rolled her eye and tilted her head so she could see Gene clearly.
“No change with you I see.”
“No it’s quite peaceful. And I don’t have to deal with obnoxious twits like yourself.”
Alex rolled her eyes and sat down at the bar, ordering a glass of wine.
“How long are you going to keep this up?”
