A fortnight ago the Financial Times warned that China was pursuing “AI diplomacy” to woo the Global South. Here is what that sinister campaign has delivered over the last week.

Uzbekistan and Indonesia. Two AI-powered satellites launched on Wednesday from the waters off Shandong. One will run full-cycle monitoring of Uzbekistan’s cotton industry; the other will track crop growth and assess disaster risk for Indonesian agriculture. They process data in orbit rather than on the ground, cutting disaster assessment from hours to minutes.

Djibouti. Dockworkers on the Red Sea coast now have extreme weather forecasting through China’s MAZU meteorological model. “This is the kind of technological support we’ve long been hoping for”, a technician at the national meteorological agency said. MAZU is the world’s first national-level action plan answering the UN’s Early Warnings for All initiative, and meteorological agencies in more than 40 countries have accessed it through the cloud since 2024.

Africa, continent-wide. A Fudan University China-Africa AI disaster early warning programme has just been selected for the UN’s International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development – putting satellite and AI capacity at the disposal of countries highly exposed to natural disasters and largely lacking the means to forecast them.

Malaysia. A Chinese robotics firm has rebuilt production lines in the labour-intensive natural rubber industry using custom AI and high-precision servo control.

Brazil. A jointly developed AI platform now lets farmers manage an entire growing cycle and monitor conditions in real time.

Egypt. Researchers at the National Research Centre are using a Chinese AI screening platform to analyse genomic datasets for new antibiotics, having identified more than 30 promising lead compounds. “Work on the screening and validation of drug lead compounds that used to take two years can now be completed in a few months”.

Cotton yields, storm warnings, rubber factories, crop monitoring, new antibiotics. Maybe this “AI diplomacy” thing isn’t so bad.
