Matthew — Chapter 12 of 28

EXPLAINED
On the Sabbath, Jesus’ disciples pluck grain and eat. The Pharisees call it unlawful. Jesus points to David eating the shewbread and the priests working in the temple, then says one greater than the temple is here and the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath day. Mercy is greater than sacrifice.

In the synagogue a man has a withered hand. The Pharisees ask if healing is lawful, seeking to accuse Him. Jesus asks if they would pull a sheep from a pit, then says a man is worth more and it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath. He restores the hand. The Pharisees plot to destroy Him.

Jesus withdraws, heals the multitudes, and fulfills Isaiah’s word of the Servant who does not strive or cry out, who does not break a bruised reed or quench smoking flax, until He brings judgment to victory, and in whose name the Gentiles trust.

A blind and mute man possessed by a demon is healed so he speaks and sees. The people ask if this is the Son of David. The Pharisees say He casts out demons by Beelzebub. Jesus answers that a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. If He casts out demons by the Spirit of God, the kingdom of God has come. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven in this world or the next. A tree is known by its fruit; the mouth speaks from the heart. Every idle word will be judged.

They ask for a sign. Jesus calls them an evil and adulterous generation and gives only the sign of Jonah: as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Nineveh and the queen of the south will condemn this generation because a greater than Jonah and a greater than Solomon is here.

An unclean spirit that leaves and returns to an empty house brings seven worse spirits, so the last state is worse than the first. So it will be with this generation.

Jesus’ mother and brothers wait outside. He stretches out His hand toward the disciples and says whoever does the will of His Father in heaven is His brother, sister, and mother.

Matthew places this chapter to show rising opposition, Jesus as Lord of the Sabbath and the Servant of the Lord, the danger of calling the Holy Spirit’s work the work of Satan, and true discipleship that does the Father’s will.

SUMMARY
Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath who heals and does good, fulfills the gentle Servant prophecy, casts out demons by the Spirit of God, warns against blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, gives the sign of Jonah pointing to His death and resurrection, and declares that those who do the Father’s will are His true family.

KEY POINTS
- The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath; mercy outweighs sacrifice.
- It is lawful to do well on the Sabbath; Jesus heals the withered hand.
- He fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy as the chosen Servant who does not break the bruised reed.

APPLY IT TODAY
Rest in Jesus as Lord of the Sabbath and show mercy instead of loading others with man-made rules. Do good without waiting for a convenient day. Do not call the work of the Holy Spirit the work of the devil. Watch your words. Trust the empty tomb and walk as true family by doing the Father’s will.

In Löchgau (BW) soll ein 36-jähriger Türke in der Nacht zu Sonntag, 18.10.2026 im gemeinsam bewohnten Haus seine Schwester angegriffen und derart schwer verletzt haben, dass sie kurze Zeit später im Krankenhaus verstarb.
