Establishing an organic hazelnut orchard using regenerative agriculture to improve soil biology, discussing mistakes made, lessons learnt and equipment choices.
@ArableSam I can just imagine what would happen if I took that machine onto my fields now. Within a minute I would be running for the digger to pull it back out!
After a long two-and-a-half-year wait, I opened up the Johnson Su bioreactor to see how well the chicken manure and woodchip have broken down. I then put the compost to the test by applying it around some hazelnut trees and into a garden bed.

We have been busy planting Katy, Discovery and Boskoop apples, Conference Pears and Victoria Plums on Gubb Farm. The goal is to help develop biodiversity by providing a habitat for wild pollinators, while hopefully producing fruit for sale.

The trees were planted as part of the Orchards in the Community, @hostinireland, #DCsforbees initiative. If you would like to get involved:

I would be interested to hear if you agree with the interpretation of the research papers, and what you think is best practice for orchard floor management or managing market gardens.
I have been reviewing scientific research papers on orchard floor management strategies to help maximise yields. It is very interesting comparing the various approaches and the results were surprising in many areas.

Also what I found very interesting, was the use of biochar to help offset pH lockup in high nitrogen applications, from chemicals, manure or possibly hay mulches.
#biochar
To my surprise, green manure approaches underperformed in trials. Possibly that is down to bad practice, as I suspect you probably need to terminate the plants after the accumulation phase before the nutrients are spent on their next phase of growth.

Surprisingly, mulching is repeatedly coming out on top in terms of yield and tree growth, beating pre and post-chemical treatments.

Important lessons learnt from establishing a coppicing forest from cuttings. Now at 95% success rate. The video talks about the choice of cutting; how to plant them; the expected woodchip yield from coppicing; includes an update 7 months after planting.
