What are we doing here?
A very grim lesson about what happens in a dangerous world when superior technology concentrates power into the hands of adversaries who don’t share our values, waiting to be unleashed.
An upcoming big controversy for frontier AI labs like Anthropic and OpenAI, will be when we find out how the quantize their models served to users based on demand pressure. This explains the “nerfed” phenomenon.
We meet in an hour of change and challenge, in a decade of hope and fear, in an age of both knowledge and ignorance. The greater our knowledge increases, the greater our ignorance unfolds. No man can fully grasp how far and how fast we have come.
Consider the pace of our progress. For thousands of years, we carried our knowledge in stories, then in manuscripts painstakingly copied by hand. Then came the printing press. The steam engine. And now we are teaching sand to think.
So it is not surprising that some would have us stay where we are a little longer, to rest, to wait. If this capsuled history of our progress teaches us anything, it is that man in his quest for knowledge and progress is determined and cannot be deterred.
We shall assemble a millions of GPUs, feed them the power of entire nations, and embark upon an untried training run toward an unknown intelligence, and bring back cures, discoveries, and abundance beyond anything mankind has yet known.
But why, some say, ASI? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask: why climb the highest mountain? Why fly the Atlantic? Why teach sand to think?
We choose to build ASI.
We choose to build ASI in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.
Because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills. Because that challenge is one we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to ship.
And therefore, as we set sail, we ask God's blessing on the most hazardous and dangerous and greatest adventure that man has ever gone.
