For centuries, Castel Gandolfo has served as the summer retreat for popes. The historic estate outside Rome is evolving into a hub for sustainability, job training and outreach programs helping vulnerable communities through the Borgo Laudato Si initiative. @NorahODonnell gets a look inside the papal grounds where Pope Leo XIV visits weekly.
When Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, protodeacon of the College of Cardinals, appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica at 7:12 p.m on May 8, 2025, his words: “Habemus papam," were followed by cheers heard around the world.
Ten minutes later, the new Pope Leo XIV came out onto the balcony, smiling and waving to the crowd to give his first public blessing “urbi et orbi” (to the city and the world).
The crowd shouted repeatedly, “Viva il papa” as Pope Leo’s eyes appeared to tear up.
“Peace be with you,” were Pope Leo’s first words to the crowd. “My dear brothers and sisters, this is the first greeting of the risen Christ, the good shepherd who gave his life for God’s flock,” he said, praying that Christ’s peace would enter people’s hearts, their families and “the whole earth.”
The peace of the risen Lord, he said, is “a peace that is unarmed and disarming.”
One year later, the Pope's message of peace to the world has not wavered. Happy first anniversary, Holy Father, and may God bless you in your ministry for many years to come!

On the anniversary of his death, many pay tribute to Pope Francis by leaving flowers at his tomb.
Pope Francis was the first Latin American pope, a vocal advocate for the poor, and promoted many women to leadership positions within the church.
On the first anniversary of the birth into heaven of our dear #PopeFrancis, his words and actions remain written in our hearts. We carry on his legacy by always proclaiming the joy of the Gospel, announcing God’s mercy, and promoting fraternity among all men and women.
@BrianBurchUSA@RaymondArroyo Such an unprecedented meeting was most unwarranted, and only served to cause greater division between the Holy see and the United States as well as a majority of Roman Catholics in the UNITED States. This madness must stop! This is not what Jesus died for!
I renew my invitation for everyone to join me for the Prayer Vigil for Peace, which we will celebrate in St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday, April 11, at 6:00 PM Rome time. #PrayTogether#Peace

JUST IN: Pope Leo XIV’s Vicar General for the Diocese of Rome issues statement after the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, was barred by Israeli police from entering the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass: https://t.co/ErrkA1ge0z
Press Statement from the Diocese of Rome
The Diocese of Rome expresses its fraternal closeness and solidarity with Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, and with Father Francesco Ielpo, Custodian of the Holy Land, following today’s report from the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Custody of the Holy Land.
We have learned with deep sorrow that ecclesiastical authorities were prevented from accessing the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate the Palm Sunday Mass — an act that appears serious and unjustified, and which raises grave concerns for freedom of worship and for the respect of the Status Quo in the Holy Sites.
In a time marked by tension and suffering, the witness of those who work tirelessly for dialogue and reconciliation deserves respect, attention, and protection. Through his pastoral mission and steadfast dedication to peace, Cardinal Pizzaballa stands as a spiritual and human reference for all who believe in the power of fraternity among peoples.
The Diocese of Rome joins in the prayer offered this afternoon from the Mount of Olives, asking the Lord to grant the gift of peace for Jerusalem, for the Holy Land, and for all peoples affected by violence, so that hostilities may cease and paths of justice, respect, and coexistence may be opened. Furthermore, we raise our supplication for the Palestinian population of Gaza and the West Bank, severely affected by the violence of weapons and by humanitarian suffering that calls upon the conscience of the international community.

Pope Leo XIV in a message to the French Bishops, tells them to find generous solutions to include those attached to the Traditional Latin Mass:
“Dear brothers, you finally intend to address the delicate subject of the Liturgy, to which the Holy Father is particularly attentive, in the context of the growth of communities bound to the Vetus Ordo. It is troubling that a painful wound concerning the celebration of Mass, the very sacrament of unity, continues to open in the Church. To heal it, a new way of looking at one another, with a greater understanding of each other's sensitivities, is certainly necessary; a way of looking that can allow brothers, enriched by their diversity, to welcome one another in charity and the unity of faith. May the Holy Spirit suggest to you concrete solutions that will allow for the generous inclusion of those sincerely attached to the Vetus Ordo, in accordance with the guidelines established by the Second Vatican Council regarding the Liturgy.”
