As school begins in England, periodic reminder that schools which choose to reward 100% attendance without equally rewarding disabled children who cannot achieve this for disability related reasons may well be breaching the Equality Act and the Human Rights Act
Today is autistic pride day. And there is something special about being able to post a video of me stimming, when even going back a year or two years I could never have done that. My autistic traits are the parts of myself I grew up feeling embarrassed about. I wanted to hide it all away, to blend in and be like everyone else. But no matter how hard I tried, I just wasn’t like everyone else, and trying to be broke me. I don’t think autistic pride means you have to love being autistic. I think autistic pride is about taking back the power from the world and the people that wanted me to hide my autistic self. Learning to love myself as I am, accept myself for who I am, and know that I am autistic and that is okay. It is not good, it is not bad - it just IS. I know I am lucky to be able to discover the authentic me, and feel safe to be myself. I am leaning in to the authentic version of me as fully as I can.
Happy #AutisticPrideDay. Know that however you feel about this day is okay. However you feel about being autistic is okay. ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜
(also taking a moment to feel the emotion that I can even post this caption, after years and years of hating myself. this is healing).
Such a wonderful clip from @sarapascoe about getting stronger and more resilient as you get older, how tough it can be as a teen, and about being proud of and accepting yourself 🥰
Mental Health Awareness Week
When I was a teacher and a headteacher, I didn't really appreciate what anxiety can do to a child.
I cared deeply but I didn't truly understand.
Then one of my own children fell ill.
Lived experience changes everything.

If you are horrified at the scandal of sub-postmasters being convicted of crimes they didn't commit, spare a thought for the thousands of parents who, while desperate for support. are being prosecuted for the apparent crime of their ill child's attendance being not good enough.
A story of why school is not for all..
For many years we tried incredibly hard to get our child to school to the point in impacted further on their mental health and resulted in a breakdown.
They had wanted to go to school so we had all kept trying. 1/
When I am doing consults with parents or schools regarding children who are struggling to access school, I always ask, “Do they have a safe person and a safe place they can access?”
Until they do, there is little point in trying to implement any other support or strategies.
The Mental Health Act is not fit for purpose. I’m supporting this @MindCharity petition calling on the UK government to reform the act before the next general election and give people more say over their treatment. Will you join me? https://t.co/qgin3a82NM
Sunak pledges to extend tram line to Manchester Airport - only one tiny problem - IT ALREADY EXISTS
And has done since 2014!
After the Conspiracy Party Conference #CPC23 this week, they have now truly entered the political Twilight Zone

#Attendance: Have you considered flexible schooling? With 28% of secondary students persistently absent, flexi-schooling is easier to achieve than you might think. @SarahSudea sets out the case for enabling more pupils to go to school less often: https://t.co/okjJ582QeD
I hear many stories of young people who struggle to get the support they need from their family, and from loving parents who don't know how best to support their children who pick/pull/bite, so I wrote a letter from my teenage self to my parents. #trichotillomania
Boy walks into reception late for school.
Receptionist says ‘late again!’
Enters building. Passing member of staff says ‘are you late again?’
On his way to class, someone else asks him for a minute. ‘Are you ok?’ They say.
Boy confides that he has no bed. 4 children in a 2 bedroom house. Mum has late nights and he gets himself ready.
Good to consider how we may greet some children in a morning.
