Les Américains qui ont exploré l'Ouest en 1804 ont eu besoin du français pour réussir. Et d'une jeune Amérindienne, son bébé sur le dos.

En 1803, Napoléon vend la Louisiane aux États-Unis. À l'époque, ce nom couvre près d'un quart du territoire américain actuel.

Le président Thomas Jefferson confie une mission à deux officiers, Meriwether Lewis et William Clark. Traverser ce territoire jusqu'à l'océan Pacifique.

Ils partent en mai 1804, près de Saint-Louis. La ville a été fondée par des Français quarante ans plus tôt. Beaucoup de leurs hommes parlent français.

Le premier hiver, ils engagent un chasseur de fourrures venu du Canada français, Toussaint Charbonneau. Sa femme vient avec lui. Elle s'appelle Sacagawea.

Elle est née chez les Shoshones, un peuple des montagnes Rocheuses. Enfant, elle a été enlevée par une autre tribu.

En février 1805, elle a un fils, Jean-Baptiste. Elle fait le voyage avec lui sur le dos.

Pour franchir les Rocheuses, il faut des chevaux. Ce sont les Shoshones qui en ont.

Pour leur parler, il faut quatre personnes. Lewis et Clark parlent anglais à l'un de leurs hommes. Il traduit en français pour Charbonneau.

Charbonneau traduit pour sa femme, dans une langue amérindienne qu'ils partagent. Et elle parle aux Shoshones dans leur langue.

Le chef shoshone qui négocie avec eux se révèle être son frère. L'expédition obtient ses chevaux.

Le 23 septembre 1806, après plus de deux ans de voyage, elle rentre à Saint-Louis.

Aujourd'hui, Sacagawea figure sur une pièce d'un dollar, son fils sur le dos. Un enfant qui porte un prénom français.

In February 2026, workers repairing a collapsed church floor in Maastricht, Netherlands, made a discovery that has historians holding their breath.

Buried in the nave, directly in front of where the altar once stood, was a skeleton. Next to it: a French coin from 1660 and a lead musket ball lodged at chest level. The deacon who was there when the first bone appeared says he is 99% certain he knows who it is.

They think they've found d'Artagnan. The real one.

Most people know the name from Alexandre Dumas's 1844 novel The Three Musketeers, or one of the many films. But the fictional hero was based on a real man: Charles de Batz de Castelmore, born around 1611 in Gascony, southwest France. He was a soldier, a spy, and the most trusted fixer of King Louis XIV.

The real d'Artagnan was not a romantic hero running around with his friends. He was a career soldier who worked as a covert agent for Cardinal Mazarin during one of France's most turbulent periods. He guarded a disgraced finance minister under house arrest for four years because Louis XIV trusted no one else to do it. By 1667, he was the effective commander of the elite Musketeers of the Guard, the king's personal protection unit.

He was also, by all accounts, a decent man. Not always a given in 17th-century French court life.

In 1673, at around 60 years old, he was recalled from a governorship he hated to fight in the French siege of Maastricht. On June 25, a musket ball hit him in the throat. He died on the battlefield and was buried nearby. Where exactly has been a mystery ever since.

French historian Odile Bordaz spent 25 years arguing that the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Maastricht was the most likely burial site. It was where Louis XIV had his headquarters during the siege and attended daily mass. Dutch archaeologist Wim Dijkman spent 28 years trying to get permission to look. Then the floor caved in, and the church called him.

The skeleton was found exactly where you would bury someone of exceptional importance. The musket ball was at chest level, matching historical accounts of how he died. The coin had been minted by the bishop who presided over a royal mass for the Sun King.

A DNA sample taken from the jawbone is currently being tested in a laboratory in Munich, compared against genetic material from living descendants of d'Artagnan's family. Results are expected within weeks.

After 353 years, we may finally be about to find out where one of history's most legendary soldiers was laid to rest. Not the fictional one. The real one.
