When my attendance system won Best Undergraduate Project in Lagos, it validated a core belief: innovative Al solutions can solve real African challenges.

A few open-source tools I keep reaching for when I need an AI agent actually to see the internet. Sharing in case it saves someone the search:

- yt-dlp, still the gold standard for pulling video metadata and transcripts. Turns any talk into searchable text.
- Firecraw, a full web-context API: search, scrape, crawl, and even interact with JS-heavy pages; returns clean markdown/JSON.
- modelcontextprotocol/servers, the reference MCP servers. The protocol's at 10k+ public servers and 97M+ monthly SDK downloads now.
- agent-reach, a capability layer that installs, health-checks and routes the best backend per platform. One command, no API keys. (This is the one I set up recently.)
- Jina Reader, curl https://t.co/eeNARfVCB5<url> and you get clean markdown. The simplest "read this page for an LLM" primitive there is.
- Exa, semantic search built for LLMs; wires in over MCP, no key on the free tier.

The thread connecting all of them is grounding. I'm increasingly convinced the edge in 2026 isn't a bigger model, it's giving the one you have access to current, citable reality.
