@syforlondon@NoJusticeMTG You think this SINGLE manifesto pledge influenced the 2019 GE to such an extent? Where is the critical thinking? Do you even remember how massive an issue Brexit was at the time? Please delete
@PhilipPullman@DrFrancisYoung The meaning is quite clear, Philip. This is pedantry typical of children. Once again, you’re exposing your prescriptivism
@CanistriLorna@PhilipPullman@bbclaurak@susannareid100 I’m not a fan of Laura. I’d be the first to argue her bias is thinly veiled. But to criticise her grammar rather than the substance of what she reports/how she reports seems ludicrous. And to be honest, it’s typical of language snobbishness
@CanistriLorna@PhilipPullman@bbclaurak@susannareid100 In some northern dialects, a sentence such as ‘I were working yesterday’ would be deemed grammatically “correct” because it is commonly used by native speakers. Would the use of the past tense auxiliary verb ‘were’ rather than ‘was’ be deemed a grammatical violation to you?
@CanistriLorna@PhilipPullman@bbclaurak@susannareid100 But what’s the point of arguing it’s incorrect? The point Laura is making is clear, no? Did you struggle to grasp the semantics of any of the other words in the sentence because the object form is being using rather than the ‘correct’ subject form?
@PhilipPullman@bbclaurak@susannareid100 Language changes, Philip. And language is a democracy. Enforcing these archaic grammatical principles is not only elitist, but also exposes an ignorance of how language works and an ignorance of years of linguistic research and scholarly literature
@PhilipPullman@bbclaurak@susannareid100 But what she wrote sounds perfectly fine. You will find that most people will use the accusative/object form (me) as a subject in interrogative sentences, which is what Laura has done here. Nothing is impeding you from understanding the sentence. You are simply a prescriptivist
@NotSambol@Lynn_McGoo Ye Ron’s chatting shite. To slate British Chinese food is slate the efforts made my Chinese immigrants to adapt their cuisine to our palates
@ClarkeMicah You even say it yourself, Peter. A causal relationship has not been proved. We know people turn to alcohol and drugs following a decline in their mental health. No evidence cannabis causes mental health problems. You seem to rely solely on anecdotal evidence in your ramblings
