Elon Musk recently made a shocking statement: “Saving money for retirement will become meaningless.”
According to him, the traditional idea of building wealth over 10 or 20 years may become completely outdated because of the coming singularity, the point where AI starts improving itself at an accelerating pace.

Here’s a breakdown of his prediction in three key points:

1. Standing at the “event horizon”
We are approaching a point where AI’s self-improvement accelerates so rapidly that the future becomes fundamentally unpredictable. As Peter Diamandis explains, once we pass this singularity, the rules we rely on our common sense, economics, and planning may no longer apply. Traditional retirement plans based on linear projections could collapse because the assumptions behind them will no longer hold.

2. The drastic reduction of costs
AI and robotics will drive labor and production costs closer and closer to zero. A “post-scarcity” world may emerge where basic necessities, food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, energy, are abundant and extremely cheap. If the cost of living drops this dramatically, the very concept of saving huge sums for retirement may become unnecessary.

3. Compression of the time axis
Long-term planning over 10 or 20 years will no longer make sense. Technology is advancing exponentially, and today’s advantages or asset values could become obsolete within just a few years. Instead of focusing on long-term accumulation, the ability to adapt quickly to rapid change, liquidity, flexibility, and agility, will become far more valuable for survival.
