This is a major issue. Some of the societal groupings come with environmental correlations, including discrimination and SES differences that can impact outcomes.
The important thing here is to realised how tied to society these constructions are - the overaching term used, the legality of asking these questions (eg, often illegal in France in many contexts), and the categories of ethnicity/race presented to people to choose from.
