@BromleyCrossBoy@PaulSuttonKing Wow!!! Thank you! Some Facebook genealogy sleuths have found a grandson living in Buckinghamshire so have tried to make contact
MYSTERY! Do you recognise people in these photos? They are from a collection of papers found under some items donated to a charity shop in Horncastle. They include Austrian papers from 1945 belonging a lady named Aloisia Heidenkummer as well as newspapers from the Bracknell area
The Bracknell newspapers are from the 1960s and there does not seem to be any connection to Horncastle or Lincolnshire. The shop volunteers think the person who donated the items may not have realised the papers were in the box under newspaper and we’d love to reunite them
Only 1 month to go! The map is filling up but we need your help to light up Horncastle and create a magical outdoor trail✨ It’s free to sign up 👇

A new Witchcraft themed exhibition opens in Lincoln Castles' Magna Carta vault.
Interestingly, @Northlincmuseum has at least one Witch Ball on permanent display. They are fascinating and much under-studied items.

The story was recorded by Rev James Alpass Penny in his book ‘Folklore Round Horncastle’ published in 1915.
The clergyman added that he felt sure the old rider was in fact in league with a different more earthly spirit, and was called to meet fellow smugglers 🍾
Many years later when the old Night Rider lay dieing in his bedroom in a cottage long since demolished amidst the heather on Kirkby Moor, there was such an awful noise as no one had ever heard. His family fled the house in terror!
To hide their shame his family filled the coffin with stones so that no one would realise what had happened. But on their way to the church they quarrelled - for they were as bad tempered as their father - and the coffin fell and broke open and the truth was discovered.
On one occasion there was a fire in the stable so the servant called out to his master, for fear the whole place would soon be consumed. But the Night Rider simply strode in and shut the door. In the morning he was amazed to find the stable sill standing untouched.
For Halloween 🎃 here’s a local folklore story, THE NIGHT RIDER OF HALTHAM.
In the village of Haltham, on the road south of Horncastle, there once lived a tall, dark, handsome, but very bad tempered gentleman.
His servants complained that he summoned them at all hours to saddle his horse and then disappear into the night🏇 In the early hours he would return with his poor horse looking as if it had been ridden hard for miles. It was said he went to meet the devil 👹 and do his bidding
