Happy 40th birthday, Nintendo Entertainment System! 🥳 Redesigned from Nintendo’s 1983 Famicom, the NES first hit U.S. test markets on October 18, 1985, with a nationwide release on September 27, 1986.
The initial game lineup included: 10-Yard Fight, Baseball, Clu Clu Land, Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Golf, Gyromite, Hogan’s Alley, Ice Climber, Kung Fu, Pinball, Soccer, Stack-Up, Super Mario Bros., Tennis, Wild Gunman, and Wrecking Crew.
NES was my first console. After falling in love with Mario and Zelda at my daycare, my grandparents bought me this console for Christmas. My dad got me The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II, and King’s Knight (I’m holding them here!) that same year. Those 3, plus the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cartridge that came with my Action Set, were the first games I owned. They’re my treasures and I’m so grateful to still have them.
I still remember the zeitgeist of NES so clearly. I was very fortunate growing up on a street of gamers, and every child’s family in my neighborhood, boys or girls, had a Nintendo. Kids who came to my house usually played Zelda 1 and II. The boy across the street always wanted to play Billy Elliott’s NASCAR challenge. The girl two doors down only owned Marble Madness, Paper Boy, and Where’s Waldo so we’d play that during sleepovers. I’d play Mario 1-3, Castlevania, and Metroid with the sons of my babysitter. When I’d go to visit my Dad I had Contra, Tetris, TMNT, and more waiting for me.
Eventually more of us got Super Nintendo and played more Super Mario World and A Link to the Past a continued with next gen consoles beyond, but we all still loved our Regular Nintendo. Those days were magical, and I’m happy to celebrate 40 years of NES today ❤️
What were the first NES fgames that you owned? Mine were Zelda 1, II, King’s Knight, and Mario/Duck Hunt!
