Yesterday in/on #Sudan:
- Juba Peace Agreement signatory armed groups, who had maintained a neutral position so far, announced they're now entering into the active conflict
- UN Assist. Sec-Gen for Dept for Political & Peace outlined the still leaderless UN special political mission (UNITAMS) would now undergo a 'strategic review', to be led by Ian Martin, former SRSG to Libya
- the Permanent Mission of Sudan to the UN in NY purportedly informed the UN SG of its decision to terminate UNITAMS
- US House and Senate foreign affairs committees issued a searing statement urged the US President/Administration must change their approach to Sudan
- we enter the eighth month of these terrible wars
In brief, yesterday the ongoing wars in Sudan grew and fragmented while formal instruments for peace and civilian protection shrank, though may (finally) be reorganising.
Everybody, every world leader, should be much more engaged in helping 50 million people in Sudan survive the coming weeks and months. Life-saving aid needs to get in, civilians need to be safe or allowed to safety, and a way out of this tragic catastrophe must be carved. Every opportunity to help people survive, small or large, local or global, must be seized.
As the 'formal' inter-governmental system is failing the majority of millions of suffering people in Sudan right now (and it's being allowed to fail, or even made to fail), I look forward to tomorrow in Cairo the start of a Sudanese civil society-led humanitarian conference (@sudan_crisis).

It is mind boggling how the world is dealing with the RSF. Their track record is known, their previous crimes were labelled a genocide, their mercenary operations are documented, yet the RSF enjoys a legitimacy bestowed on it by the IC that is confusing to say the least!

With schools repeatedly closed, the learning crisis is deepening.
#Sudan cannot afford a lost generation.
UNICEF urges to ensure the best interests of children are prioritised and that schools should be safe & open for girls & boys.
From the day they are born, every child everywhere has a right to live in a peaceful world.
This #WorldChildrensDay, join us in calling on leaders to protect children from violence.

#Sudan’s rainy season is bringing floods, damages & disease
In W #Darfur, 100,000+ people who fled conflict are still sheltering in crowded public buildings & now we’re seeing latrines overflow, skin lesions on kids, loss of food stocks
Humanitarian appeal less than 1/4 funded
#Sudan - I'm receiving disturbing reports about the repression and killings of protesters since yesterday. The military authorities must immediately stop the use of (lethal) force, restore internet & mobile services and listen to protesters' demands. #SudanCoup#KeepEyesOnSudan
